Peace of Mind Vol 1-32: Shocking Shooting Near A Toronto School
On Thursday November 3rd, two teenagers were shot near a middle school in the north end of Toronto. This shooting was shocking.

A 19-year-old male was shot several times and rushed to the hospital in critical condition. A 14-year-old female was shot in the ankle and was taken to the hospital with less serious injuries. The shooting took place outside Oakdale Park Middle School in the Jane and Finch area of Toronto.

It appears that the young girl was not a primary target of the shooter, but was shot after she witnessed the shooting of the male victim. The school was locked down for several hours following the shooting, as were two other schools in the area. Toronto Police are currently investigating the situation. They are looking for two suspects in connection with the shooting.

Safety Tips if the Shooting Occurs

In many public shootings there is no advance notice that anything could be wrong. However, if you see any suspicious activity, such as a person with a weapon or other suspicious activity. Doing so could safe a life. The bottom line is that you need to remain alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. If something seems wrong, leave the area right away.

If a shooting does take place, you’ll need to act quickly. If you are close enough to see the shooter, run or hide. Hiding behind a door or large furniture will certainly help. If you have to run, run quickly and in a zigzag manner. This makes you a more difficult target to hit. If you are unable to see the shooter but you’ve heard gun shots, take cover immediately. If you have a cell phone, call the authorities as soon as you are safe.

Unless you are faced with absolutely no other option, do not attempt to attack the shooter. Avoid him if the shooting occurs. He or she has a gun and isn’t afraid to use it. If authorities are on the scene, always follow their direction and stay safe. Police officers and security guards often have the training and experience needed to react quickly and safely in dangerous situations. SafeTech offers security guard services for businesses, special events and many other purposes.

VoIP Alarm Systems

These days not everyone has a landline in their home. More and more people are trusting cellular phones and voice over IP (VoIP) systems to communicate. Alarm systems are adapting as well.

Most people believe that you need a landline in order to have a monitored home alarm system. That was true in the past, but today it is no longer the case.

Alarm systems are now able to safely and securely communicate through VoIP systems. Some people have worried about using the Internet and VoIP systems with their alarm systems because an unreliable Internet connect could compromise your security. Thankfully, there are now systems available that ensure your alarm system remains functional regardless of the state of your telephone or Internet connection.

These alarm systems use broadband signaling as a method of alarm transmission. You can even add this functionality to your existing alarm system with easy to install modules that allows any Contact ID compatible alarm panel to be monitored by a broadband Internet connection instead of a telephone line.

For more information on these systems and how you can get one, please contact SafeTech Alarm Systems today.

Can Urban Planning Reduce Crime?

No matter where you live, there are likely some areas of your city that are more dangerous than others. You may often wonder why this is the case and think about what can be done to solve these problems.

The causes of crime are varied and they differ from city to city. However, a criminologist and professor at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Albert believes that proper urban planning plays a big part in the safety of a neighbourhood.

Filipuzzi is experienced in a field known as “environmental criminology.” She studies the way the surroundings impact illegal activity. For example, she studies how the right number of trees on a street make it inviting and visually appealing, but how too many trees obscure sightlines and increase crime.

In a recent article n the Calgary Herald, she notes that while street lights are generally a good idea to keep a neighbourhood safe, there are studies “that suggest cars are more likely to be broken into under a lamp post.”

Other urban planning tips include planning areas so that local business owners can live in the area where their businesses operate.

“It’s hard for shady people to do shady things when there’s a bunch of legitimate users taking control of the public realm,” she says.

Filipuzzi also notes that crime is not a “downtown problem” in most cities. Kelly Sundberg, chair of Mount Royal University’s justice studies department, agrees.

“In the suburbs, a lot of people go downtown to work and leave their home empty for the day. We tend to find a lot of break-and-enters in those areas,” he says. “By contrast, no one wants to commit crime when there’s lots of people around and stuff going on.”

B.C. Murder Victim Texted Boyfriend “I’m being creeped” Before Her Death

An 18-year-old girl who was killed in Armstrong, British Columbia sent her boyfriend a text message moments before her death. This message was “I’m being creeped.” which suggested that someone was following or harassing her.

Taylor Van Diest was found unconscious with severe injuries on Monday October 31st. She lated died in hospital.

When her boyfriend replied to her text message and received no response, friends and family members went looking for her. They found her near a railway crossing that was less than one kilometre from her home. She was rushed to hospital but did not survive.

Authorities are still looking for a suspect as well as anyone who may have seen Van Diest earlier that day. The RCMP have assigned more than 30 officers to the case.

Peace of Mind Vol 1-31: Protecting Business From Unrest

Crime News: Two Men Killed In Ottawa Mall

Protecting business is mandatory. Two men were shot and killed in a shocking shooting in an Ottawa mall. The victims were 32 and 35 years old. One suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

The men were shot half an hour before the mall closed, at or near a tanning salon in the mall. One of the victims was the co-owner of the salon.

Police, firefighters and ambulances rushed to the mall after they heard reports of shots being fired. When they arrived, the two men were found without vital signs. They were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead. The shooting took place on Wednesday October 26 and currently no arrests have been made.

Safety Tips for Protecting Business

Unfortunately sometimes innocent bystanders are “caught in the crossfire” during shootings. This has happened many times in many high profile cases. While you can never be 100% sure when crime will take place, being alert and aware of your surroundings definitely helps. Read our tips to protecting business.

If you hear an argument or confrontation starting nearby, leave the area immediately. Do not assume that nothing bad can happen in a public place. Some criminals are very brazen in their crimes and the presence of witnesses will not dissuade them.

If at any point you hear shots fired or see violence taking place, duck or hide immediately. You will need to quickly analyze the situation you are in and determine whether it is safer to hide or try to escape.

Do not think that the shooter will not ignore you because you are not the intended target. Someone who is willing to open fire in a public place does not care about anyone else in the room. Stay uninvolved and safe. Do not try to confront or disarm the shooter. You could be putting yourself in great danger.

As soon as it is safe to do so, call 911.

Protecting Your Business From Unrest

Protests, riots, demonstrations and other large public gatherings and moments of unrest can be extremely troubling for business owners. This is especially true if the event happens to be taking place near your place of business.

Thankfully, there are steps you can take to protect your property and your employees and remain in business.

Many protests and demonstrations are peaceful and should cause no damage to local businesses. However, as we saw during the G20 in Toronto and the Stanley Cup Playoffs in Vancouver, the possibility for violence exists within any large group of people.

One of the first things you can do is prepare for the event. If you know that a large protest or demonstration is taking place near your business, take the time to conduct an overview of the security at your company. Look for the weak points in your security set up and determine what you will need to do in order to fix those weak points. This may include installing bars and/or gates on your business in order to prevent windows and doors from being damaged or broken. There are many ways for protecting business.

If you know a large event is going to take place nearby, you may wish to hire a security guard service to protect your company. Uniformed security guards are often a strong crime deterrent. Security guards can also protect your employees should the crowd become angry or violent.

Security cameras are another way to protect your business. Video surveillance cameras are able to capture crimes taking place as they happen. If violence does break out and your business is vandalized or burglarized, a security camera will be key in reporting the crimes to the police and your insurance company. The video footage can also be used to correctly identify the criminals involved.

It is important to take all possible precautions when a large gathering is planned near your business. Criminals and vandals often hide inside otherwise peaceful groups and use the anonymity that large groups provide in order to strike. Preparing yourself and your business beforehand will certainly help keep your property and your staff safe should the unfortunate happen.

Halloween Safety Tips for Parents

Halloween is almost here! It’s time for ghosts, goblins and trick-or-treating! Halloween can be an incredibly fun time for children and it’s natural for them to be very excited about going out and collecting candy.

However, you need to make sure that your children are safe on Halloween night and that they take a few important precautions when trick-or-treating.

Your child’s costume should be safe. Avoid costumes that drag on the ground or make it difficult for your child to see or move around propertly. Make sure your kids where comfortable shoes that fit well. Also, choose a costume that is suitable for the weather. You do not want your child to be too hot or cold.

Children younger than nine years of age should always be accompanied by an adult. Children of all ages should make sure their parents know exactly where they will be trick-or-treating and how long they will be out.

Also, make sure your children have a flashlight handy and that their costumes are reflective so that cars and other pedestrians can notice them easily. Make sure your kids do not run across the street and that they obey all traffic rules.

Tell your children not to eat any treats they are given until they get home and you can look over their haul. Make sure they eat something before heading out so that they’re not hungry and tempted.

Toronto Police Describe Alleged Criminal as a “Serial Killer”

“The callousness of the murders was really shocking,” said Det. Sgt. Hank Idsinga. “If these allegations are proven in court, he is an evil man. To rationalize why he did some of the things he did, I’m at a loss… I really am.”

Sgt Idsinga is talking about Mark Garfield Moore, who has been been in police custody since March. He was recently charged with four Toronto murders and 54 firearms offences.

Toronto Police chief Bill Blair called him an “individual who has terrorized whole communities” if he is in fact guity of the crimes he has been charged with. If the allegations are correct, Moore is one of the most prolific and violent killers in Toronto history.

Moore was arrested after a lengthy investigation that included police receiving several tips from the public. There is no evidence to suggest that Moore was a member of a gang. Police also recently busted the firearm-trafficing ring that was allegedly supplying Moore with weapons. The police are still searching for a motive for the killings.

The four murders that Moore is charged with took place between September and November of 2010. Moore was charged with the murders on October 19, 2011. He apparently laughed when he was told of the charges.

Peace of Mind Vol 1-30: Online Safety: Keeping Teenagers Safe

Crime News: Accused Serial Killer in BC

What can we do for our children’s online safety? A 21-year-old man who is currently awaiting trial for murdering a teenage girl is now being charged with at least three other murders.

The man, who is from Prince George, British Columbia, was arrested recently for the 2010 murder of a 15-year-old girl from Fraser Lake, BC. He has now been charged with three additional murders that took place in northern BC in 2009. All of his alleged victims have been women.

The accused serial killer was known as “an avid user of social media and technology” according to police. He was charged in the three additional murders after a 10-month RCMP investigation. Make sure your talk to your children about online safety.

Safety Tips

Awareness is incredibly important. You should always be aware of who is around you at any given time. You should also pay attention to what is going on around you. Is that stranger getting closer and closer to you? Is the man who is leaving the bar intoxicated and thus possibly irrational? Stay away from these bad situations.

You’ll also want to be aware of your surroundings. Is there a dark alley nearby that you could be pushed into? Is anyone else on the street that could help if you were in trouble? Recognizing the danger around you is the key to staying safe.

If you’re getting into your car, look through the windows to make sure no one is in the back seat or anywhere else in the vehicle. Once you’re inside your car, lock the doors immediately.

In addition to staying aware, make sure that you never go with a stranger to another location. This is true even if the person threatens you. He or she intends to hurt you anyway, so stay where you are. There is a good chance you are in a public place where you can be seen by someone else. Moving to a more remote area only increases the chances that you will suffer harm.

In all cases, staying alert and aware of your surroundings and trusting your instincts is the right path to take.

Keeping Teenagers Safe Online

The Internet contains many excellent opportunities for people of all ages. For most teenagers, it likely takes up a large portion of their lives. Teenagers use the Internet to study, play games, socialize, make plans, share photos, communicate and more.

However, there are some dangers with using the Internet, especially for teenagers. You’ll want to follow these online safety tips to keep your teenagers safe online.

In order to increase an online safety, teach your children about privacy and the potential dangers of sharing things online. While teenagers will likely want to share photos, videos and email online, make sure that they understand how easy it is for items shared online to get into the wrong hands. An email can be forwarded and pictures – even those posted on social networks with privacy settings – can be saved and passed on. Let your teenagers know that anything shared online has the potential to become public, so be careful what is shared. Provocative or incriminating images should never be shared online, even with trusted friends. These images can very easily fall into the wrong hands.

When teenagers are having conversations online, they can sometimes get into trouble. Online bullying is a very real problem that impacts the lives of many teenagers. Make sure your teenagers know that people may act in a certain way in order to get them to share details that they can then exploit. A 2008 University of Toronto study showed that half of the students questioned had reported having been cyberbullied. Online bullying is dangerous because it is constant and can come from many different sources. It can lead to public embarrassment, depression and even suicide. Teach your teenagers to remain respectful online and to report any bullying they see or encounter to an adult.

Many teenagers fail to report online bullying or harassment to parents or other adults because they worry about having their computers or phones taken away from them. Let your kids know that they should always feel like they can come to you with a problem that took place online and that they won’t be in any trouble if they were acting respectfully and responsibly.

For online safety, make sure your teenagers know that they don’t need to give their phone number, their email address or accept friend requests from everyone. Strangers can use Internet services to get teenagers to lower their guard and share private details about themselves. Teach your children to only share these details with those they know personally and to take precautions even then.

Make sure your teenagers understand that they should never give out passwords or log in details to anyone in any situation.

Teenagers should never meet someone in person that they have only talked to online. Tell your children that they should let you know if anyone online wants to meet them in person.

Using Lighting To Keep Your Home Safe

Darkness is a powerful tool for criminals. They use it to stay hidden and commit crimes without being seen. However, you can use light as a powerful tool to fight crime.

Properly lighting your home is an excellent way to deter crime and catch criminals in the act.

Motion-activated lighting is an excellent way to illuminate the exterior of your home. Motion-activated lights are an energy-efficient way to protect your home as they only turn on when they sense motion nearby. This means you’ll use less electricity which saves you money and helps the environment.

You should make a point to install lighting around the perimeter of your property as well as alongside your driveway and walkway. You should also install lights above all entrances including your garage door.

Lighting isn’t just great for deterring and spotting crime. It also helps security cameras capture higher-quality video. In the event that a crime does take place, lighting will help your security cameras in identifying suspects.

A house that has lightning installed properly is less likely to be a target for criminals than a house that is dark.

Online Safety: Protecting Your Valuable Data

The data stored on your computer is valuable for a number of reasons. You could have valuable financial data stored on your computer. You could have critical business information. You could have priceless photos. Whatever it is you are storing, it’s probably important.

It’s also important to know that computer hard drives are not invincible. They can break like any other piece of mechanical equipment and they will take your data with you when they fail. In some cases data can be recovered from a damaged hard drive, but it is often very expensive and it is not covered under your hard drive’s warranty.

This is why it is important to have copies of your data stored on a back-up hard drive. For the online safety it is important to have every piece of critical data stored in at least two places. The more important your data is, and the more often it is updated, the more frequently you should back up.

You may want to consider keeping one copy of your most critical data in a different location, such as a friend or family member’s house or in a storage facility. If there was a fire or other disaster in your home, it would take your computer and your original back-up with it. If you have an off-site back-up, you’ll be able to save your most critical data. There are also online back-up services for this reason. Follow our tips for your online safety.

You’ll also want to frequently check your back-ups to ensure that they are still working. There is no worse feeling in the world than losing your primary copy, checking your back-up and then noticing that those files are corrupted.

Teenagers Safety Tips

We typically focus our worries and concerns on young children, especially when it comes to safety and security. We often think of teenagers as mature enough to look after themselves and the fact that they don’t seem to want our help makes it even more difficult to be involved in their safety.

However, it is important that you go over some teenagers safety tips. Here are a few quick teenagers safety tips that will help keep teenagers safe and secure.

If your teenagers are staying home alone, make sure you go over some basic safety tips with them before you leave. It may seem like they’re too old to hear these tips, but it’s very important to ensure that they act safely. Tell them about the dangers of letting strangers into your home and make sure they know that in no situation should a strange person be allowed inside the house. In order to improve teenagers safety, it’s also important to go over fire safety tips and to have a plan for an emergency.

If you have teenagers that are now able to drive, a whole new group of safety concerns must be addressed. It’s important to always follow the rules of the road (such as speed limits) and make sure that your teenager understands the importance of seatbelts. Also, you should set a limit for the number of people that are allowed in the car at one time. An overcrowded car can be distracting to the driver and very dangerous. Some regions even have laws that limit the number of people in the car with a teenage driver. Follow our teenagers safety tips.

Another major driving distraction is texting. Texting or using a mobile device in any way while driving is illegal in many areas because it is incredibly dangerous. It is important that you teach your teenage drivers the importance of staying focused on the road while driving. Leading by example is a good place to start. Talk to your kids about teenagers safety.

Drinking and driving (as well as drinking in general) is very dangerous for teenagers. Under no circumstances should your teenager feel that it is okay to drink and drive. Let him or her know that it is always better to call for a ride home or to take a cab than it is to drink and drive. Also, make sure your teenagers know that they should never get into a car if the driver has been drinking. Let them know that they can always call home for help.

The Internet is another place where teenagers can get into serious trouble. Many teens spend a large portion of their time online and teenagers often share personal details on the Internet. Let them know that some people can use these details to harm them. In our next issue of Peace of Mind we will have an in-depth look at Internet safety for teenagers. Read how is teenagers safety online very important.

While teenagers are not young children any longer, it’s important to understand that they can still get into dangerous situations and that sometimes they will need help. Be sure to talk with your teenagers and let them know that they can always call you for help. A phone call may be an annoyance, but it’s better than having a teenager in a dangerous situation alone.

Staying Safe & Secure While Traveling

Traveling can be an exciting, enriching and wonderful experience. By following a few quick safety tips you can make sure that you have a safe, secure and stress-free trip.

Here are a few quick safety tips for travelers:

It’s a good idea to check with the Travel Reports that are posted by your country’s government before traveling. These reports will let you know of any safety concerns and they will also inform you of any health concerns as well as list your entry requirements for that country.

Always keep your passport on you and in a safe place. Do not leave your passport in your luggage. If you luggage is lost or stolen, you could be in trouble without your passport. Do not leave your passport in your hotel room either as it could be lost or stolen there as well.

When carrying your passport on you, consider buying a special passport holder that you can wear underneath your clothing. This will prevent theft and keep your passport secure. Do not give your passport to anyone other than verified officials such as those at the airport.

Carry glasses, medication, money, valuable, personal identification and other important items in your carry on luggage if possible. You do not want to risk having these items lost, stolen or tampered with in any way.

Leave a copy of your trip itinerary with a friend or family member just in case of an emergency. Include your flight information as well as the hotel you are staying at and a contact phone number.

Make sure that you learn the laws and customs of the country that you will be visiting. You don’t want to get yourself in trouble by accident!

Five Quick Ways To Increase Security In Your Office

Whether you manage a large business or run a small proprietorship, you understand the importance of safety and security in the office. Keeping your workplace safe doesn’t have to be costly or difficult. Here are a few tips for securing your office.

Make sure you have a designated person assigned to unlocking and locking up the office each day. It can be tempting to just ask the last person who leaves each day to lock up, but there are problems with this method. The last person in the building may forget to lock up or he or she may not realize that they are the last person inside and leave without locking the door. An access control system can help keep your company secure as well.

Make sure that all guests sign in at the front desk and that they are given vistor badges so that they can be recognized when they are in your office. This will prevent strangers from entering sensitive areas.

Consider installing security cameras in your business. You’ll find that the savings you’ll receive on your insurance rates and by reducing company loss will more than pay for the cost of the cameras. If you’re interested in security cameras, please visit our security camera information page.

Remember that security in an office does not stop with physical security. Information security is incredibly important as well. Make sure that all of your employees use strong passwords for their computers and their email. When sharing company documents, make sure that you use an encrypted file format. In the event that any files somehow leave your company, they will be useless without the encryption password.

Peace of Mind Vol 1-28: Shocking Flash Mob Thefts

Shocking Flash Mob Thefts Taking Place

If you spend any time watching videos online via YouTube or other sources or if you’ve watched the news recently, you may have heard of flash mob thefts that are taking place at convenience stores and other similar businesses across North America.

A “flash mob” is an event that is typically organized on the Internet. Groups of people suddenly appear in a predetermined place, perform some sort of task or act and then quickly disperse. Typically flash mobs are done for fun or to attract attention or publicity. However, people are now using flash mob tactics to damage property, steal items or cause other crimes. These crimes are sometimes called “Flash robs”.

You’ll find the videos of flash mob thefts all over the Internet. Recently this tactic was used to rob a Maryland convenience store of a great deal of merchandise in under a minute. According to a CNN report on the robbery, “Surveillance video shows a couple of teens walking into the Germantown 7-Eleven store Saturday at 1:47 a.m. Then, in a matter of seconds, dozens more young people entered and grabbed items from store shelves and coolers. Police said the teens left the store together, without paying for anything.” Our tips can help you to stay safe from flash mob thefts.

People have also started using the technique in Canada. A Toronto Star report mentions a similar crime that took place in Ottawa. According to the Star, “the Quickie convenience store in Ottawa’s west end was virtually empty. The next minute, 40 or so youth descended en masse. As they marched in they grabbed everything in sight. The next minute, like a well-oiled many-tentacled machine, the mob turned around and left with $800 worth of goods.”

All of these crimes were caught on store surveillance cameras. In the Maryland robbery, police used the store’s security footage to identify 17 suspects and charge them with the crime. The suspects were charged with either theft, conspiracy to commit theft or disorderly conduct. The police intend to use the security footage to identify the remaining suspects. “These kids basically thought they could walk in there, create havoc and remain anonymous,” said Capt. Luther Reynolds of the local police when discussing how security camera footage helped identify the suspects. Stay aware of flash mob thefts.

This situation once again shows how security cameras help fight crime. For more information on security cameras, please visit SafeTech Alarms Security Camera Section.

Dead Bolts: A Major Part of your Security System

There are many parts to a successful security system. From the alarm to the motion detectors to the surveillance cameras and the monitoring service, an effective security system uses many different pieces of technology. However, one item that many people forget isn’t a great technological invention but a very simple device: A dead bolt.

A dead bolt is a locking mechanism that cannot be moved from the open position except by rotating the lock cylinder. This gives dead bolts a distinct advantage over spring bolt locks and they make a door much more resistant to opening without the correct key.

Dead bolts should be used on exterior doors whenever possible. You may wish to use them in conjunction with a spring bolt lock if you’d like.

Unfortunately, most people do not think of the door lock when they are installing a home security system or a business security system. While alarms, motion detectors and surveillance cameras are certainly important, you should be sure to remember the dead bolt as well.

Why do dead bolts work so well? The main reason is because they are incredibly difficult to open without the correct key. While spring bolt locks can be opened by using a suitable instrument to push on the bolt, a dead bolt requires much more force to open. This makes it impractical for most thieves to attempt.

However, when you install a dead bolt you also need to ensure that the door itself is strong enough to protect against an attack. When faced with a dead bolt, some criminals will look to remove the entire locking mechanism, the door jam or the door itself.

A dead bolt, combined with a strong door and a suitable security system the best way to keep your property safe.

Security Apps For Your Smartphone

Smartphones are quickly becoming a more and more important part of our lives. In addition to simply using them to communicate, we’re now using them to make purchases, conduct our banking, schedule trips and much more. That’s why it’s more important than ever to protect our phones and the data we store on them.

Thankfully there are a number of apps available for all smartphone brands that help keep your data and your phone safe.

“Phone Security Free” By Empire Apps is a free iPhone app that uses a fingerprint scanner to unlock your phone. This ensures that only you will be able to unlock your phone.

To protect yourself from viruses, malware and other issues, AVG offers a security app for both Android and iPhone. The Android app currently offers more features, including file scanners, Internet security and more. AVG has also recently released an application for Windows Phone 7 devices as well. Another similar security application, “Kaspersky Mobile Security” is available for both Android and Blackberry phones.

Remember, one of the best ways to protect your smartphone data is to be careful with which applications you install. Only install applications from trusted sources. In addition, you should protect your smartphone like you would your wallet. Do not leave it lying around or unattended. The information on it can be incredibly valuable and dangerous in the wrong hands.

Peace of Mind Vol 1-27: How Residential Security Systems Pay For Themselves
SafeTech’s Peace of Mind publication includes security tips from SafeTech’s loss prevention experts, in-depth statistical crime reports and facts on safety and security and tips on commercial and residential security systems.

Peace of Mind is the only way to get this exhaustive resource of security, crime, safety and loss prevention delivered to your inbox for absolutely free.

Peace of Mind is the definitive resource for loss prevention advice and the most recognized and trusted authority on safety and security, just as SafeTech has established itself as the premiere loss prevention company in North America.

How Residential Security Systems Pay For Themselves

Many people are under the misconception that residential security systems are incredibly expensive, time-consuming and confusing. There are a lot of people who feel that it is easier and cheaper to not have a security system at all.

Thankfully that is not true. Keeping your home safe is simple and affordable. Installing a security system can even save you money!

Thanks to new technology, residential security systems as well as business security systems are easier to install, easier to use and more affordable than ever before. However, when you’re thinking about installing a security system, you need to consider more than just the money you’ll spend for the service. First of all, you’ll need to consider that most insurance companies provide discounts to clients who have alarm systems installed. If you have a video surveillance system or a centrally-monitored alarm system installed, you’ll receive an even larger discount.

Another way that residential security systems and business security systems pay for themselves is by doing what they’re designed to do: Prevent crime. One break-in can cost you thousands and thousands of dollars in damage and stolen goods. If you’re operating a business and your offices are broken into, you may need to shut down operations while you investigate the crime and determine what has been stolen. This will cost you even more money. A security system prevents this hassle.

Commercial and residential security systems also act as a powerful deterrent. This is especially true when you install security cameras. Criminals do not want to be caught and surveillance cameras provide powerful evidence to police. Rather than risk being caught in the act, criminals will often avoid homes and businesses that have security cameras installed. This is great news for protecting your property and saving you money.

For instance, vandalism and property damage can be incredibly expensive to repair or clean. Surveillance cameras and security systems will keep criminals off of your property so you won’t have to deal with these expensive problems.

If you’re interested in finding out how residential security systems can save you money while keeping your family and your property safe, please contact one of our loss prevention experts today.

Protecting Your Home From Natural Disasters

Natural disasters can be incredibly devastating. While natural disasters are often unavoidable, there are some things you can do to protect your property from damage caused by natural disasters.

One thing you will need to do is to find out if your home is in a flood zone. In the United States, the FEMA website lists this information. Knowing what to expect in certain situations is a key to preparing yourself.

Depending on where you are located and the type of natural disaster that you are faced with, you’ll need to take different precautions. However, there are a few tips that will be helpful in a variety of situations.

If you are in a flood area, you will want to elevate your home’s main breaker or fuse box as well as any heating, cooling or ventilating equipment. No matter where you live, you may also want to anchor any fuel tanks or other similar items so that they cannot be blown or washed away easily.

It’s also a good idea to reinforce and retrofit all windows and doors, including your garage door. This will make the stronger and less likely to be damaged in a severe storm. Installing storm shutters on your windows is a good idea as well.

You may also want to build a “safe room” or storm shelter in your home. These are rooms that have been created with the purpose of withstanding disaster.

Make sure you have an emergency exit plan as well, just in case it becomes unsafe to remain at home.

Security Cameras Catch Criminals In The Act

In addition to residential security systems, security cameras can protect your home, even if you’re not in it! More and more people are monitoring their homes with security cameras while they’re away on vacation.

In a town near Memphis, Tennessee, police are using video provided to them by a homeowner in order to identify criminals. While on vacation, the residents of the home could see the criminals inside their house burglarizing them by monitoring their home security cameras?. The police have now uploaded the footage and several pictures to their Facebook account in hopes of identifying the criminals.

This is a new and powerful way to involve the community in the fight against crime. It also lets criminals know that their actions will not go unnoticed. If you break into a home these days, there’s a chance that your picture could be splashed across television and the Internet almost immediately

“I think more and more homeowners are conscious of their surroundings and safety and more and more folks are getting home security systems, cameras and things like that and it helps us do our job better,” said Chip Washington of the local police force.

Homeowners no longer have to feel powerless against criminals. Home security systems, video cameras and new technology are empowering people more than ever before in the fight against crime.

Protecting Community: Setting Up A Neighbourhood Watch Program

By Sean O’Leary

Being involved in crime prevention is one of the best ways to avoid becoming a victim. Sitting back and waiting for crime to come to you is a dangerous path to follow. Only through proactive attempts to fight crime can you ensure the safety of your home, your family and your community.

A great way to take a proactive approach protecting community and stopping crime is by joining a community Neighbourhood Watch program.

A Neighbourhood Watch program is when a group of citizens devoted to crime and vandalism prevention get together to watch out for one another and make their neighbourhood safer. Sometimes these groups are called “crime watch” groups as well.

When members suspect criminal activity, if they see something suspicious or if they witness an actual crime taking place, members contact the appropriate authorities immediately. Neighbourhood Watch groups are effective because they can watch for criminal behaviour at almost all times and act on this behaviour right away.

If you would like to start a Neighbourhood Watch program in your community and become involved in protecting community, a good way to start is by speaking to as many neighbours as possible. If your neighbours are unfamiliar with the Neighbourhood Watch concept, you can provide them with that information as well. Once you have a number of people willing to participate, schedule a community meeting to discuss the particulars of the group. You will want to collaborate with local authorities as well as local security providers. Both of these groups can give you important information and tools that will help improve your group.

Hanging Neighbourhood Watch signage on all participating homes is a great way to let potential criminals know that the community is on the look out for suspicious behaviour. This in itself can be a great crime prevention tool. You may be able to get signs from the police or from a security company. If not, you can make them yourself. There are many ways to protecting community.

Security companies in your neighbourhood may also be willing to show you which tools are available to catch criminals in the act. Security technology is always growing, changing and improving, so you may learn something new by talking to a local security provider. When a community decides that it’s not going to be victimized by crime it’s a powerful statement and an act that will reduce crime in your area.

Preventing Back-To-School Bullying

Children have been back at school for several weeks now and you’ve probably once again settled into a normal routine. Now that the hustle and bustle of a new school year has died down, it’s a perfect time to talk to your children about bullying.

Many different children of all ages can be victims of bullies and each child reacts to bullying in a different manner. Just because your child seems fine and he or she is not showing any symptoms of being stressed, depressed or sad, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a bullying problem at school.

You should start by talking to your child. He or she may not be willing to dicuss being bullied right away, but talking about school, friends and other day-to-day activities may bring out conversation about school bullies.

It’s important that your children feel safe discussing bullies. Even if your children are not being bullied themselves, you want your children to feel safe discussing school bullies so that you will know about any problems that may be occurring at school.

If you discover that your child is being bullied, you may want to talk to the bully’s parents or your child’s teacher. You will also want to teach your child that bullying is wrong and that having confidence and being brave often stops bullies.

Your child’s school may even have an anti-bullying program that helps educate children and make them feel safe.

If the school doesn’t have such a program, you may want to talk to some other parents and teachers about starting one up.

Facebook Security

If you don’t use Facebook, there’s a good chance that someone you know does. The social network is incredibly popular and people all over the world are using the site to share photos, keep in touch with friends and plan events. However, Facebook does have some privacy and security concerns. If you’ve been using the site for a while, you may be familiar with some of them. However now Facebook has finally come out with a full guide to security on the site. It is a 14-page document that is written for “young adults, parents and educators.” The guide is available on the Facebook website. Facebook’s security page also covers a variety of other topics involving staying safe online.

One of the main topics that it covers is how you can avoid being attacked on the site. Topics range from choosing secure passwords to avoiding dangerous scripts and ignoring fake friend requests. It also mentions how hackers can use shared links to cause damage and suggests that users do not click unknown or strange-looking links, even if they are from friends.

Not only is the guide helpful, but it also stresses an important point. Now that more and more people are using Facebook and storing more and more personal information on the site, taking precautions and being safe are more important than ever.

Many Internet security tips are listed on the Facebook security page including:
  • Choosing a strong password that is difficult to guess.
  • Not sharing personal information with people you do not know and trust
  • Using caution when opening links or downloading attachments
  • Making sure that you use the most updated version of your web browser available
  • Installing anti-virus and anti-spyware technology on your computer
  • How to properly adjust your Facebook privacy settings
  • How to report suspicious or strange Facebook behaviour

Keep Children Safe When They’re Home Alone

No matter how old they are, it can always be a little scary to leave your children at home alone. You never know what they can get into and it’s scary to consider what they would do if something went wrong. However, here are a few quick tips that can help you keep children safe when they’re home alone and give you some peace of mind.

First of all, remember that most guidelines state that children younger than 12 years of age should not be left home alone. However, it’s important to consider your child’s maturity level before you make the decision to leave him or her home alone. Sometimes older kids are not ready for the responsibility. Talking to your children about leaving them home alone before doing so will greatly help.

One of the first things you should do is ensure to keep children safe is that your children know what to do if there is an emergency. Place a list of emergency phone numbers in a place where your children can easily find it. Make sure they understand where the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are and that they comprehend why the alarms may sound. Practice an emergency evacuation plan and route and make sure your child understands when he or she should leave the house immediately. Plan two escape routes in case one route is blocked.

You’ll also want to make sure that you let your child know when you will be home and give him or her a number where you can be reached (such as a cell phone number.) You may want to call home from time-to-time depending on how long you will be away. Also, make sure that all medications, toxic chemicals, alcohol, firearms and other dangerous items are locked up so that your children cannot reach them. This will help you keep children safe from these items.

Most importantly, teach your child not to open the door if someone should knock or ring the doorbell. Criminals often take advantage of children who answer the door in order to get inside the house. Tell your children to call you immediately if someone is knocking at the door repeatedly or attempting to get into the house. You should then call the police, have a trusted neighbour or relative check on them quickly, come home yourself or a combination of all three. You should consider tese tips to keep children safe when home alone.

Finally, if you have security cameras installed in your home, you may be able to view the cameras from your smartphone, laptop or other Internet-connected device. For more information on watching security cameras from your phone, please visit the security cameras section of the SafeTech Alarm Systems website.

Preventing Employee Theft With Security Cameras

Most businesses install security cameras in order to prevent unlawful, illegal and costly behaviour by clients, customers, guests and other criminals from outside the organization. However, security cameras can also prevent employee theft.

Studies have shown that a majority of company losses come from theft within the organization. According to a National Retail Security Survey, employee theft accounts for 46.8% of all retail inventory shrinkage. The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners states that 27% of large companies are seeing an increase in office employee theft and that this theft accounts for 7% of annual revenues or $994 billion in the United States alone.

Clearly employee theft is a huge problem, both in retail stores and in offices. Installing security cameras and monitoring employee actions can reduce theft and save your business a great deal of money. The savings you’ll see from the reduction in theft will more than pay for the cost of installing the cameras.

Placing security cameras in stock rooms, retail stores and any area where company property may be stolen. Not only will these cameras catch theft as it occurs, but they will allow you to monitor who is entering these areas at all times. You should also point security cameras at cash registers or any other areas where money is kept.

Not only will security cameras catch thieves in the act, but they will also work to deter crime. Many employees steal from their employers because they feel that they will not be caught doing so. If they are aware of the security cameras, they will be much less likely to steal anything.

Protecting your business and your assets from criminals both inside and outside of your organization is vital to running a profitable business. Security cameras are proven to reduce theft in the workplace. You can install security cameras in your company and use the savings to pay for them! Security cameras from SafeTech Alarm Systems can help you keep an eye on your business 24/7.

How To Safely Work With Contractors In Your Home

One of the reasons you have likely installed a security system in your home is to prevent strangers from entering. However, there are times when you need to allow relative strangers into your home – sometimes unsupervised. When you are working with a contractor, housekeeper, babysitter or any other outside worker, it’s important to take some precautions to protect your home and your family. This will help you keep children safe and protect your property.

Whether you are doing renovations, having repairs done or hiring someone to look after your home or family, it’s important to select the right person. This choice should not be made lightly. Remember, you’re essentially allowing a stranger free access to your home so you need to ensure some level of trust. First of all, you need to make sure that the person you are hiring has the appropriate licenses and qualifications. Anyone who is fully licensed should have no problem showing you proof of that fact.

It’s also incredibly important to check references. You should ask the contractor for a list of references prior to agreeing to the work. You can also find contractor reviews online from a number of websites. Not only do you want to ensure that this person is actually qualified, but a track record of satisfied clients shows that the contractor is trustworthy as well.

When hiring someone, make sure to find out if any subcontractors will be used. These people do not work for the contractor on a full time basis, so it is important to find out who they are, if the contractor you are hiring has worked with them before and all other vital qualifications. Also, you’ll need to find out if the person you hire directly will be on-site at all times, You do not want to give your contractor permission to allow other strangers into your home unsupervised.

Remember that you can also use your security system to monitor contractors that are working in your home. Not only can you view their activities through your home security cameras, but your alarm system itself can provide you with vital information as well. You can use the knowledge of when your alarm is armed and disarmed to see how long the contractors are working in your home. When you alarm is deactivated in the morning you know that they have arrived and when it is armed you’ll know that they left.

This knowledge will help keep them honest and your home safe.
