How Criminals Lie Their Way Into Your Home

Home invasions are dangerous, scary and potentially deadly. Your home is meant to be your sanctuary and your safe zone. You should never be made to feel like your own home is not safe. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what criminals do when they invade your home.

Criminals will often scout a home in advance in order to plan their crimes. They will also resort to deceptive means in order to try and catch their victims with their guard down.

For example. in a recent home invasion attempt in Atlanta, Georgia, a man wearing a bulletproof vest and holding a gun walked onto a resident’s porch. He had the words “POLICE” or “SHERIFF” printed on his clothing. The resident was suspicious and did not open the front door. He instead let his dog out from the back door and this sent the man running. Home security cameras caught the man running off the property along with two other men who were hiding nearby. Clearly this was not a police officer. It was a group of criminals who were intent on invading a home.

Unfortunately, home invasions happen. They happen because criminals know that they have the most success when they strike while their victim’s guards are down. Opening the door when someone knocks on it is something that all of us are used to doing. Not answering a knock would seem wrong and we’d be worried about appearing rude or strange. This is how many home invasions begin. Criminals take advantage of our tendencies and try to exploit our daily behaviours in order to strike.

You don’t want to open your door unless you know who is on the other side. Having a peephole installed will allow you to see who is knocking without putting yourself in danger. There are even LCD peepholes that allow for multiple viewing angles from anywhere in the house. These are great for families with children who may not be able to see out of a traditional peephole.

A home security camera is a great idea as well. It will allow you to record whatever actions are taking place outside your home and you can see if anyone is suspiciously lurking or hiding outside before you come near the door. Remember, safety first!

Take Precautions When Posting Photos Online

We live in the age of social media. Many people now share vacation photos through Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Picasa and other online services. This can be a great way to show all of your family and friends your photos.

However, whenever you are sharing personal information online, you need to take some precautions.

First of all, you need to worry about letting criminals know where you are at all times. If you’re away from home and you take a photo and upload it to the Internet, you’re potentially letting the world know that your house is empty. Burglars frequently use social media to determine when people are away from home in order to attack an empty house.

Furthermore, many cell phones and cameras are able to “geotag” your photos and this information can be displayed online along with the photo.

Not only would this feature give criminals additional information·if you are not at home, but it could also provide information about exactly where you live when you take photos in your house. Criminals can use this information to scout your property and determine potential weaknesses in your security system. Thankfully, this option can be turned off on most cell phones, cameras and websites.

How Do You Secure Your Valuables?

Where do you place your most treasured belongings? How do you ensure that the items that mean the most to you are secure? Jewellery, important documents, photos, financial records and other items are often priceless and irreplaceable, so you’ll certainly want to protect them. But how?

One option is to store your precious belongings in a safe. This will make them much more difficult to steal even if your home security system is compromised and your property is broken into. However, not all safes are created equal.

If you’re planning on buying a home safe, the first thing you’ll want to determine is the size. Obviously, in most cases larger safes are heavier and therefore more difficult to steal. If you have room for a large safe and your home can support it, you may want to choose one that is quite heavy. No matter what the size of the safe is, you’ll definitely want a safe that can be bolted to the floor. Criminals will often try to steal the entire safe rather than spending time trying to break into it inside your home. Bolting your safe to the floor makes stealing the safe much more difficult.

Safes can also protect your belongings from fires or floods. If this is important to you, be sure to purchase a home safe that explictly lists fire and/or flood protection. Do not assume that all safes offer this feature. Underwriters Laboratory or another similar company will test all safes for fire and flood protection if these features are offered by a particular safe. There are many different levels of flood and fire protection, so choose the one that makes you feel adequately protected.

Before you purchase a home safe, you’ll also want to consider the type of lock on the safe. Some safes come with set combinations while others can be set by the user. There are also a few safes that come with key locks. In most cases, a locksmith will be required if you forget your code or lose your key and are then unable to open the safe.

Finally, when protecting irreplaceable items, you’ll want to conduct some research beforehand and read some consumer reports about different safes in order to find the one that best suits your needs.

Keeping Your Kids Safe Outside

You would think that protecting your children from strangers, cars, animals and other children would be enough to worry about as a parent. Unfortunately, that’s not true! When your kids are playing outside, you’ll also need to. Especially during the summer, kids love to run and play outdoors. This exercise is great for them and by following a few tips you can make sure they’ll be safe. If your children are going to be running around or playing sports outside for an extended amount of time, make sure that they stay properly hydrated by drinking lots of water. You’ll also want to make certain that they take breaks during their fun if they start to feel tired or confused. These could be signs of exhaustion or heat stroke. You’ll want to make sure that your children wear a hat and sunscreen as well for protection. You may want to spray some bug spray on them as well to avoid bites and stings. When playing sports, you’ll want to ensure that your children are wearing all of the necessary safety equipment. This includes a helmet for many sports, including bicycling. Failure to wear the proper safety equipment can result in serious injury. Take special precautions if your children are playing near a body of water or a swimming pool. Young children should never do so without supervision. You’ll also want to teach your children to avoid playing near traffic. If your children are enjoying a park, playground or beach, check the area that they are playing in before you let them loose. Sometimes you’ll find broken glass, sharp rocks or other dangerous items hiding in the grass, gravel or sand. Children can hurt themselves by stepping on or falling onto something sharp. You’ll also want to remove tripping hazards such as stray branches. When you’re at the playground, make sure that all of the equipment is safe and in good working order. Also, certain types of playground equipment are not safe for very young children, so you’ll have to keep an eye on your kids while they play.

Summer Barbecue Safety

A great way to spend a sunny summer day is to grill up your dinner on the barbecue. Not only will you probably get to enjoy some delicious food, but you’ll also be able to spend some time outdoors. However, barbecuing can be dangerous if you don’t take some precautions. Here are a few tips for a successful and safe summer barbecue:
  • Make sure that your barbecue is in good working order. Inspect the propane tank (if you have one) for dents, leaks or other damage. You should also inspect all hoses as well as the grill itself. This is especially important at the beginning of the summer when you likely haven’t used the grill in months, but it’s good to give everything a good once over each time before you grill.
  • Store all of your food properly in order to avoid spoiling and cross-contamination. This is crucial when cooking meat.
  • Keep all utensils, plates and tools clean and away from uncooked meat. If you are using one platter and set of utensils for raw meat, make sure you use a different one for cooked meat.
  • Never leave a lit barbecue unattended and have a fire extingusiher on hand just in case.
  • You’ll also want to wear a barbecue apron to protect yourself from splashes and avoid wearing any loose clothing that could dangle into the grill and possibly catch on fire.
  • Also, it’s very important that you never use a barbecue indoors or inside a garage. You always want to make sure that there is proper ventilation at all times.

How To Make Sure Your House Is Safe When You Go On Vacation

If you’re heading out for a trip with your family or friends this summer, you’ll want to make sure your house is safe and secure while you’re gone. Here are a few tips from SafeTech’s loss prevention experts that will ensure that you come home to a house that is just the way you left it! Remember the basics Start with a few basic tips to make sure your house is safe when you are away. Remember to make sure that you have the post office stop your mail while you are away. If you have any newspaper or magazine subscriptions, be sure to put those on hold as well. Nothing says “This house is empty” like a large pile of mail at your front door. You may want to have a trusted friend or relative come by to pick up flyers and anything else that may be left in your absence. Install some timers No one lives in darkness all the time and no one lives in light all the time. Installing timers in your house will make it look like people are currently living there and this will keep your home secure. Don’t broadcast your plans online You can make sure your house is safe by not tipping burglars off. It can certainly be tempting to write “I’ll be relaxing on a tropical island for two weeks!” on Twitter and Facebook, but law enforcement agencies advise against it. Criminals have been known to actively check social networks and target homes that they know will be empty. Wait until you get back before you tell the Internet about your trip. Use your security system Make sure your house is safe by properly activating your home security system before you head off on your trip. You may also want to ask your security company about ways in which you can monitor your security cameras remotely from a laptop or smart phone. This can give you the peace of mind you need while you’re on vacation.

A flood inside your home can cause serious damage. Not only can it harm or destroy items within your house, but it could cause damage to your home itself that will require expensive repairs. Depending on whether you live in a house or an apartment, you’ll need to take different precautions to avoid flooding. Check Your Pipes and Joints to Prevent Leaks You should periodically take a look at any pipes and joints in your home in order to ensure that they are in good working order. Check under and around your sinks, bathtubs, dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerators for any signs of water leaking. If any pipes or hoses are worn or damaged, replace them immediately. This will help prevent leaks. Identify Problems on your Roof While roofs generally last quite a long time, they can sometimes run into problems. To assist in drainage, clear all sticks, twigs, leaves and other debris from your roof frequently. Cleaning out your gutters and downspouts is important for stopping water leaks as well. You should also check inside your attic to see if any water is getting inside your home and stop it before it gets any worse. Regular maintenance will help prevent leaks in the roof. Keep an eye on your Foundation Make sure water is not collecting near your home. You should slope the earth around your house away from your walls so that water does not gather close to your home. This ensures proper drainage and helps you prevent leaks Have an Alarm In addition to working to prevent leaks, having a leak detection system that alerts you to problems can certainly save you a great deal of time and hassle. This is especially helpful for basements or other spaces in your home that you do not visit very often. It is also good for cottages or for people who travel frequently. There are generally two major types of leak detection systems: Active leak detection systems and passive leak detection systems. Passive leak detection systems simply sound an alarm or provide some other type of notification when water is detected. These are useful for basements, attics and other areas that you do not spend a lot of time in. However, they require you to respond to the alarm almost immediately in order to be effective. Active leak detection systems feature some type of shutoff valve that turns off a particular appliance or water to the entire home when a leak is detected. These can be installed in one area of the home or throughout the entire home. They can also be monitored by a central monitoring station for maximum protection even if you are far away from home.

How A Monitored Alarm System Works

One of the best ways to protect your home or business is to install a monitored alarm system. This type of security system provides 24 hour protection for your home or business. But how to monitored alarm systems work? Monitored alarm systems are installed in a home and connected to either standard phone lines or cellular phone connections. They are designed to contact a central monitoring station in the event of an emergency situation, such as a break-in. When the 24 hour monitoring station is alerted of the issue, they immediately begin to follow their standard emergency protocol. This protocol varies based on client specifications, local laws and other factors. In most cases, the central monitoring station calls the first number on a list of emergency contacts in order to verify the alarm. This is done to ensure that they are not responding to an alarm that has been set off by accident. Once they’ve verified the alarm, the monitoring station contacts emergency services and reports the situation. Central monitoring stations can call the police in the event of an emergency or they can call a private security service. In most cases, this decision is up to the customer. Once the authorities are called, they respond to the alarm condition by checking out the scene themselves. Central monitoring stations can monitor more than just burglar alarms. They can also monitor security cameras, carbon monoxide detectors, fire alarms, smoke detectors and more. For more information on security system monitoring, please contact our loss prevention team today.

Other Ways Your Alarm System Can Help You

A home alarm system is an excellent way to protect your home, your possessions and your family from crime such as break ins and robberies. However, home alarm systems can help you in many other ways as well, including some ways that you may not have thought of yet. For example, you can use your security cameras to monitor your home remotely from your laptop, cell phone or other Internet-enabled device. This will allow you to check in on children, pets and elderly relativelys to ensure that they are safe while you are away. You can also use your alarm system to verify when people leave or enter your house. You can check online to see that your alarm has been deactivated at 4pm so that you will know that your children got home from school safely. You can also use the alarm to know exactly when your babysitter, housekeeper, contractor or any other people working in your home enter and leave.

In the heat of summer, nothing is more refreshing than a dip in a swimming pool. However, it’s important to keep safety in mind when you’re in or near the pool, especially if you have children. Children 1-4 have the highest drawing rates of any age group and 1-in-3 accidental deaths among that age group are caused by drowning. Here are a few tips for staying safe around the swimming pool. Make sure your pool is properly fenced on all sides A swimming pool on a hot day can be incredibly tempting. You’ll need to make sure that your backyard is securely locked and that there is fencing around your pool that will prevent people (especially children) from sneaking in and going for a swim. Your city or town may have rules regarding fencing around swimming pools for this very reason. Always supervise children swimming If your children are in or around the pool, make sure that they are supervised by an adult. People can drown very quickly and even in a small amount of water. You’ll also need to watch for kids who may hit their heads on the ground, the side of the pool or the ladder.. Make sure your pool cover is safe When swimming, make sure that the pool cover is lifted away from the pool completely, rather than partially removed. If you swim under a covered pool, you could get disoriented and unable to get out from under the cover. Also, teach your children about the pool cover and ensure that they never walk on it when the pool is covered. They could easily fall in and be unable to get out. Keep your pool water is safe Regularly testing the water in your swimming pool is important. You will need to make sure that you have the right amount of chlorine in the pool, that the pH levels are adequate and you should conduct regular tests and inspections for bacteria and algae. Failure to do so can cause infections, sickness and even death. Keep a first aid kit on hand You never know when an accident can happen. It’s important to keep a first aid kit near your swimming pool at all times to treat injuries. You should also always have a phone handy in case of emergency.

How To Improve Your Garage’s Security

While many people install property locks, motion detectors and other security devices on their front door and throughout the house, it’s common that the garage is neglected. Unfortunately, this couldn’t be further from the truth. If you look at the front of almost any house, you’ll see that the garage door takes up a large amount of area. That’s a huge target that burglars will notice as well. In addition, many houses feature entrances to your home from within the garage. This is very convenient, but it could also severely weaken the security of your home. Thankfully, there are a few simple things that you can do to improve garage security. Watch Your Windows If your garage door has windows in it, you may want to make some adjustments. This is an important part of garage security. Criminals can smash the windows and use them to enter your garage. Replacing your door with a solid one is one option, but you could also install bars on the windows to increase their security. Keep It Locked It sounds obvious, but many people do not lock their garage doors at all time. This is a crucial garage security mistake. If you are planning on being away from home for a significant amount of time and you have an automatic door opener, you will want to disable it and lock the garage manually. There are tools out there that can hack into the signals from automatic openers and use them to illegally access the garage. Alarm Your Garage Rather than simply equipping your house with an alarm, consider installing alarms and motion detectors in your garage as well. This can greatly improve garage security. Keep Valuables Out Of Sight In addition to your car, there are many valuables in your garage that may attract thieves. A good garage security tip is to keep tools, lawnmowers and other valuables in the back of your garage and consider locking them up somehow. A locked tool case is a great idea to keep your valuables safe.

Camping Safety

If you’re planning on heading to a campground this summer for some quality time in the great outdoors, there are a few safety tips that you’ll want to follow.
  • Pack emergency supplies and a first aid kit. Cuts, scrapes, sprains, insect and snake bites happen. You should be prepared to treat minor injuries safely. You’ll also want to have a knife, matches, a flashlight, a compass and more.
  • Make sure you leave enough time to set up your tent or camping area in the daylight. Doing so after dark can be very difficult and dangerous.
  • Keep your campground clean and your food safely sealed inside containers. Failure to do so can attract wild animals such as bears.
  • Know which plants are poisonous and avoid them.
  • Be very careful with stoves, campfires, heaters or any other heat sources. You want to only set up a heat source in an open, safe area away from flammable items.
  • Bring proper clothing. Just because it’s warm and dry when you leave, that doesn’t mean it won’t get cold and wet soon!

Security Tips That Can Save Your Data

If you’re like most people, you probably use a computer on a pretty regular basis. Whether you’re using one for business, pleasure or a combination of both, it’s important to keep some safety tips in mind. Here are a few tips for how you can keep your data safe: Back up your data reguarly This is one of the most important computer activities you can do. No matter how safe you are, your computer is an electronic device and all electronic devices will eventually break. If your hard drive shuts down with all of your data on it, it could be gone for good. Keeping a second copy of all important data on another storage device (such as an external hard drive) is the best way to protect your data. Having two copies is better than one. Always. Be aware online Some criminals try to con victims into posting their confidential information online. If you receive an email asking you to enter your personal information or yoru financial information into a website, be aware of what you are doing. Check the website and make sure it actually is what it says it is. Some criminals use similar domain names to try to trick people. If you normally do your online banking at OnlineBankingSite.com, for example, con artists may register Online.Banking.Site.com to try and trick you into entering your account information. Be aware and be safe. Watch what you install As mentioned in the above point, you need to be aware online. You should never install a program if you do not know exactly what it does. You should also only install programs from trusted companies and trusted websites. Viruses and spyware are often hiding inside harmless-looking programs, so pay attention. Make sure your password is safe Don’t share your online passwords with anyone and choose passwords that will be difficult to guess. Someone can steal your identity and all of your information if they figure out the right passwords. Use protection Virus scanners, spyware detectors and other computer security programs are important. Make sure that you install one and that you run it regularly. However, not all programs are created the same and some can cause more problems than they solve. Be sure to only use quality programs from trusted sources.

Apartment Security Tips to Protect Your Home

Some people feel that security systems and general security tips are not important if you live in an apartment or high-rise condominium. They feel that the size and height of the building makes it unnecessary for them to worry about security. Unfortunately, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Apartment security tips are important. While apartments and condos do add some security features by their very nature, they also cause several security problems that should certainly be a concern. One security flaw with apartment buildings is that many of them have balconies. It is possible for criminal to climbs from one balcony to another or for someone to simply climb onto a balcony that is on a low floor. Balcony doors should always be secured in order to prevent break-ins. You want to make sure that you have strong locks on your balcony and that you protect yourself. If you have a sliding door, you can install a lock that prevents it from sliding. This is one of the most important apartment security tips. Another apartment building security threat comes from the fact that a large number of people are inside an apartment complex at any given time. These people may have snuck in behind residents or lied about their identities in order to get into the building. They are a security risk because you cannot be sure who they are or why they are in the building. You must be aware of who you let into the building at all times and make sure no one sneaks in behind you. In addition, one of the most crucial apartment security tips is that you should have a peephole on your door so that you can see everyone who knocks on your door in order to identify them. You should make sure that you have a strong lock and dead bolt on your door as well. Security systems are just as vital in apartment buildings and condominiums as they are in single-family homes. An apartment security system can be connected to a central monitoring station or your building’s security desk in order to keep you safe.

Keeping Your Kids Safe From Strangers

Whether your children are at school, the local playground or a friend’s house, you’ll obviously want to ensure that they’re safe. It’s always good a freshen up on some security tips that you can use to make sure your kids are safe from strangers.
  • If someone different is picking your child up from school or any other location, make sure you tell this to your child as to whoever is in charge at the venue. Tell your kids that unless they hear otherwise from you, they should never leave with a stranger.
  • Have a “secret password” that only trustworthy people know. Teach you child to ask for this password before they leave with anyone.
  • Do not write your children’s names on their backpacks, their clothing or any other visible locations. Criminals will use this information to call your child by his or her name in an attempt to gain trust.
  • Make sure your kids know their name, address and phone number as well as their parents’ names. This information is vital in the event of an emergency.
  • Teach you children how to get help if they need it. Let them know that they can trust police officers and other people in uniform. However, tell them never to go anywhere with someone they don’t know, even if it is a person in uniform, unless you say it’s okay.
  • Ask your children for details about their day. If they’ve gone to a friend’s house, talk to them at length about it to ensure that nothing inappropriate, dangerous or illegal took place.

Prevent Home Invasions: How To Stop This Terrifying Crime From Happening To You

By: Sean O’Leary You’re sitting at home when you suddenly hear someone trying to open your front door. You jump up startled, when your side window breaks. You start to panic as someone begins to climb through your window. At the same time, your front door is kicked down. You have no where to go as you reach for the phone in a panic, desperately trying to call 911. Home invasions are terrifying and often deadly. Your home is supposed to be your sanctuary, so when someone violates that space it’s incredibly disturbing. Unfortunately, most home invasions aren’t just robberies. Armed criminals frequently terrorize, attack and even murder their victims once they get inside. Therefore, it’s crucial that you take steps to prevent home invasions. The number of home invasions in Canada increased by 38% between 1999 and 2005. Police reported approximately 2,700 home invasions nationwide in 2008. Many of these criminals were armed, often with knives and guns. A man was killed in a home invasion near Calgary, Alberta in June 2011. In May 2011, three men forced their way into a woman’s home in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and assaulted her and her son. A 16-year-old disabled girl was killed by armed criminals in a home invasion in Toronto in February 2011. A mother and two teenagers were kidnapped and forced into a car during a January 2011 home invasion in Abbotsford, British Columbia. These cases are terrifying and horrific. Thankfully, it is possible to take steps to avoid becoming a victim of a home invasion and to prevent home invasions. A monitored home security system is perhaps the most important piece of home security that you can install and an excellent way to prevent home invasions. In a home invasion situation, you may not be able to call the police yourself. Unlike standard security systems, a monitored system is watched by a 24-hour monitoring station. In the event of an alarm, the monitoring station will be able to summon the appropriate authorities to your home. It’s also important to have an alarm system that gives you the option to protect and monitor your doors and windows while allowing you to move around freely inside. Make sure you set your alarm to this mode when you’re at home. Otherwise, you’re leaving yourself unprotected and vulnerable. Of course, you should always make sure your doors and windows are securely locked. Having security cameras that are also monitored is a wise idea as well if you are trying to prevent home invasions<.u>. In the event of an emergency, the monitoring station can watch your security cameras to further analyze the situation and quickly send you the help you need. For more information on protecting yourself from home invasions and how to prevent home invasions please contact us today.

Five Quick Ways To Make Your Home Safer

Not every method of securing your home involves cutting-edge technology and elaborate security systems. In fact, there are several quick and easy things that you can do to improve the security of your property and make your home safer. Here are five quick tips: Replace your locks Strong dead bolts are the best possible way to lock your doors. Replace older and less effcient locks with new dead bolts to instantly make your home safer. Strengthen your frames Older wooden door frames and window frames are weak and they can easily be smashed, pushed in or otherwise tampered with by burglars. Replacing your door and your door frame with a stronger one (solid wood or metal is the best choice) will make it much more difficult to break. Remember the frames and hinges are crucial as well. Use Double-Pane Glass Double-pane glass windows or reinforced glass windows are much stronger than single-panes. Don’t Hide Extra Keys Outside Having an extra key stored under a floor mat or a rock seems like a good idea. Unfortunately, criminals know to check those places and will easily find your keys. It makes much more sense to have an extra key with a family member, friend or trusted neighbour. Improve Your Lighting Criminals like to hide in darkness. Having a well-lit home can offer great protection and make your house look nicer too!

Avoid Having Your Online Identity Compromised By Changing Your Password

Today we store a great deal of personal information on our computers. We use the Internet to access and modify sensitive information such as banking details. We interact with friends, family and co-workers online on a daily basis. Having a password stolen can damage all of those relationships and destroy your life in an instant. This is why it is so important to not only have a unique, difficult to guess password, but it’s also vital that you change your password if you ever feel you have been compromised. It is even more important to change your password if you use the same one for all of your computer activities. (Note: using the same password everywhere isn’t s safe practice.) If you’ve been hacked, had your password stolen, accidently let your password slip, had a virus on your computer or have had your password compromised in any way you need to change your password as soon as possible. It’s not worth taking chances. If you feel like someone may know your password, change it. It’s better to be safe than sorry. When you decide to pick a new password, choose one that is very different from your old one. Use a variety of letters, not just the most common ones. Use numbers and symbols as well, if permitted. Don’t use common dictionary words, easily identifiable personal information or anything else that would be easy to guess.
