Power Cord & Electricity Safety

Electricity is a huge part of society. Today it’s difficult to spend more than an hour without using it in some way. While electricity is useful and generally quite safe, it can also be quite harmful or deadly in certain situations. The first step in handling electricity safely is to check the cord of the device you are plugging in. If the cord is frayed or damaged or if the plug itself is bent, broken or modified in any way, you should not use the device. You should always unplug your appliances and other electrical devices by pulling on the plug itself, not by pulling the cord from a distance. Pulling on an electrical cord can damage and even break the cord, which could lead to sparks, a fire or serious burns. You should also take care to avoid overloading outlets. Only plug in what you need at the time. An overloaded outlet can short out or catch on fire. Also, if you live in an older home, you may not have adequate wiring in order to support today’s appliances. We use much more electricity today than we ever have, so a home that was built quite some time ago may not be able to handle it. You should have this problem looked at by an experienced electrician. If you are using an extension cord, it’s important to use one of adequate length. A cord that is too long could easily be tripped over and a cord that is too short could be damaged if you try and stretch it. Never plug extension cords into each other in order to reach a father distance and always use cords of the right wattage. Do not run cords under furniture or other appliances and do not place them in doorways or anywhere else where they could be damaged.

Did You Know? There were an average of 3,588 incidents of property crime per 100,000 people in Canada in 2006. (Source: HRSDC Canada)

Fraud Prevention Online

People store a lot of information on the Internet and they use the web on a daily basis in order to communication, share and conduct transactions. Unfortunately, because there is so much happening online at all times, and because it’s happening so quickly, there is a great potential for fraud. The main way to avoid being defrauded on the Internet is to use common sense. You would not give your credit card number or banking information to a complete stranger, so you shouldn’t give this information to an unknown website. If any website asks for sensitive personal information, be sure that you know exactly what this website is and why it is asking for the information. A common scam is to set up spoof websites in an attempt to acquire personal information. For example, if your bank’s website is 1234bankingwebsite.com, you should make sure that you only enter your information on this particular site. It’s also important to maintain your privacy online. Something posted on a social networking website or even in your email could be hacked and stolen. Do not give you personal information to anyone online and do not post details that could be used to steal your identity on any social networking sites. If someone took your name, phone number, address, email address and date of birth from your Facebook page, they may be able to use this information along with other details about your life in order to steal your identity. This is why privacy settings on social networking sites are so important.

Portable Space Heater Safety

As we continue into winter, many people are turning to space heaters for warmth. However, like with anything that generates heat, the potential for danger exists. We’ve put together a list of tips to help keep you safe when using your space heater. Portable space heater safety is important.
  • Always be in the room and alert when you are using a portable space heater. Do not leave a space heater on when you are away and never use one while you are sleeping.
  • Read the portable space heater safety and operating instructions for the heater before using it and follow them exactly.
  • Do not operate your heater near any source of water.
  • Keep paper and fabric such as sheets and blankets away from the heater at all times.
  • Do not extend the heater’s cord too far as the tension could topple the heater and start a fire.
  • Before using the heater, inspect it thoroughly for damage and never use a damaged heater.
  • Always place the heater on a level surface where it will not tip over.
  • Watch your children and pets around the heater.
  • If possible, select a heater than has an automatic shut off, a timer and a cut-off function that stops the heater if it is tipped over.
Remember the importance of portable space heater safety.

Peace of Mind: Apartment Building Security – Vol.1-15
SafeTech’s Peace of Mind publication includes security tips from SafeTech’s loss prevention experts as well as in-depth statistical crime reports and facts on safety and security such as apartment building security. Peace of Mind is the only way to get this exhaustive resource of security, crime, safety and loss prevention delivered to your inbox for absolutely free. Apartment Building Security

By Sean O’Leary People think about security differently when they live in an apartment building. After all, you’re surrounded by other people, so it feels like it’s more likely that someone will spot an intruder. Also, unless you live on the first floor, it’s pretty difficult for someone to break in through your windows. Many apartment units only have one entrance, the front door, so they’re are fewer points of entry into a unit. However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be concerned with apartment building security. Like with all homes, apartment building security starts with the front door. If you don’t already have a strong deadbolt, you should definitely get one. Your building manager or superintendent should be able to help or advise you on this matter. Having a peephole definitely helps as well. While apartments do not have backyards, many of them do have balconies. It can often be quite easy for someone to get onto your balcony from another unit, so it’s important to always lock your balcony door. You should not leave valuables on your balcony at all. This is a big apartment building security tip. Most apartment buildings have a buzzer system at the front door. If someone buzzes your unit, make sure you know exactly who they are before you let them into the building. In many apartments you can see who is at the buzzer through a closed-circuit camera system. Also, ensure that no one sneaks in after you when you buzz someone in or when you enter the building yourself. Even if you have security guards in your building, remember that they can’t possibly see everything. You’ll need to remain vigilant and focus on apartment building security. The building’s elevator is another place you should be mindful of. If you feel threatened or in danger in the elevator, exit as soon as possible. Stand near the elevator controls and call for help if necessary. Do not enter an elevator if there is a suspicious person inside. SafeTech Alarm Systems offers apartment building security services as well!

Holiday Lighting safety

Holiday lighting is the perfect way to set a festive mood around your house. However, like with anything involving electricity, the potential for danger exists. Here are a few tips for holiday lighting safety. Examine your lights before you hang them Make sure you give all light a good inspection. If the cords are worn, frayed or otherwise damaged, do not use the lights. If any bulbs are broken, replace them before using the lights. If everything looks good, test the lights out before hanging them up. Be careful when hanging them up Don’t place nails or staples through any cords. You can always use specially-designed clips to hang your lights safely. Watch where you put them Always keep lights away from flammable materials. Use the right lights for the right conditions Place indoor lights indoors and outdoor lights outdoors. Outdoor lights are weather proof, but they are usually hotter so they belong outside. Enjoy the holidays!

Preventing Cooking Fires

Nothing ruins a meal like a cooking fire. Not only could you burn your food, but you could also damage your oven, stove, cookware or kitchen. A serious fire could even damage your entire home! About one-third of fires start in the kitchen, so it’s very important to pay attention and do everything you can to avoid kitchen fires. One of the best ways to avoid kitchen fires is to stay in the kitchen whenever you are broiling, frying or grilling food. You never know when something could jump off of the pan or grill and cause a fire. If you are using the oven for baking or roasting your meal, make sure that you stay home while the food is being cooked and that you check on it regularly. Keep flammable materials like papers, books, apron or oven mitts away from the stovetop. These can be set on fire quite easily. You’ll also want to make sure that the stove and the oven is clean. Leftover food, grease or oil can catch on fire. It’s also very important that you have the right equipment on hand just in case a fire breaks out. For small fires, you can usually solve the problem by turning off the stove and smothering the flames with a pot lid. For larger fires, you may need to use a fire extinguisher. You should always keep a fire extinguisher on hand in the kitchen. You will also want to ensure that you have a working fire alarm near the kitchen in case a large fire breaks out. You probably don’t want to place the alarm directly in the kitchen though, as the steam or smoke from ordinary cooking could set it off. For more information on fire protection, please click here.

Ways People Can Tell You’re Not Home

While burglaries do occur when people are at home, they take place much more often when people are away. In fact, some burglars purposely scout homes in order to find a time when no one is home and take advantage of the opportunity. There are a few things they are looking for when they do so. Here are a couple of signs that let burglars know you aren’t at home. Once you know what the signs are, you can take steps to make it more difficult to tell. Your house is completely light or completely dark No one spends all of their time in the light and no one spends all of their time in complete darkness either. As you move through your home throughout the day you turn your lights on and off. When you wake up in the morning you turn on the lights upstairs first and you turn those lights off last at night. You can mimic this behaviour with a series of timers. This is an excellent way to make your home look occupied when you are on vacation. There is no sound coming from within your home TVs, appliances, phones, radios and other electronics all make noise. You likely use a number of gadgets each day that make noise. If a burglar hears complete silence in your house, they can be pretty certain that no one is home. Again, using timers to simulate your daily routine can definitely help here. There is no car in your driveway Many burglars only strike homes when they see that there is no car in the driveway. If it’s possible, try and keep a car at home when you go on vacation. If you can have a friend or a neighbour move the car from time-to-time, that’s even better!

Five Ways Security Cameras Protect You

One of the best tools you can add to your home security system is a security camera. Security cameras are not very expensive, especially when compared to their value, and can easily be added to most existing security systems. Depending on your home and the layout of your system, you may want to choose wired cameras or wireless security cameras. Each type of camera set up has its own advantages. No matter what set up you choose, you will be safer with security cameras. Here a few ways that security cameras keep you safe. They monitor the outside of your home When you’re inside your house you can only see a fraction of what’s taking place outside, and you probably do not want to spend all of your time staring out the window. Security cameras monitor the perimeter of your home so you can be warned of possible danger. They monitor the inside of your home When you’re away from home it’s definitely useful to have a camera focused on the inside of your home. Whether you are recording what takes place, monitoring the video yourself or subscribed to a monitoring service, it gives you added peace of mind to see what’s taking place in your home when no one is there. They let you know that your kids are home If your kids come home every day at 4:00, you may be worried if they don’t one day. If you have video cameras installed in your house, you’ll be able to know for sure that they’re safe at home. They act as a deterrent No one wants to be caught in the act and definitely no one wants to be recorded committing a crime! Criminals will usually avoid breaking into homes that have security cameras. It’s simply not worth the risk! They help convict criminals If someone does break into your home, a security camera will record their facial features and their actions. This makes it much more likely that they will be convicted of their crimes. For more information on security cameras, please visit our website.

Peace of Mind: Event Security Guards are Important – Vol 1-13
SafeTech’s Peace of Mind publication includes security tips from SafeTech’s loss prevention experts as well as in-depth statistical crime reports and facts on safety and security. In this issue, we look at event security guards and much more. Peace of Mind is the only way to get this exhaustive resource of security, crime, safety and loss prevention delivered to your inbox for absolutely free. Trust SafeTech for tips on event security guards and many other security tips. Peace of Mind is the definitive resource for loss prevention advice and the most recognized and trusted authority on safety and security, just as SafeTech has established itself as the premiere loss prevention company in North America.

Why Event Security Guards Are Crucial

By: Sean O’Leary Some event sites such as banquet halls and meeting rooms have their own security guards. Others require that those who rent the room hire event security guards. However, even in cases where the venue does not provide or require security, it’s always a good idea to have uniformed event security guards present. If you are holding a wedding, an anniversary, a birthday celebration, a Bar Mitzvah or any other large event in a public place, it’s entirely possible that uninvited guests could sneak in. People often take advantage of the fact that the hosts and guests at large parties are often quite busy all night and are not able to watch the door for strangers. Also, since most parties held at public venues are quite large, it’s very common that those in attendance do not know everyone else at the party. This is a prime situation for thieves and criminals. Event security guards prevent this. You may not assume that an uninvited guest is a big deal, but you should stop think about the true consequences. First of all, these strangers will likely consume food and drinks at the party, costing you money. However, it gets much worse. At private parties people usually let their guard down a bit. Even those the party is in a public place, there is still a feeling of safety because it is a party hosted by a friend or family member. In these situations people are more likely to leave their wallets, purses and other valuables unattended. This makes them very easy targets for criminals. And party crashers don’t stop at eating your food and stealing your wallet. They will likely have access to any presents that are given at the event as well. Often presents given at a wedding or an anniversary are quite expensive and sometimes they are even cash gifts. An uninvited guest could easy leave your party with a large amount of money. However it gets worse. In addition to leaving valuable items behind, people are often more trustworthy of other guests at a private party. They feel that since the guest is clearly a friend of a friend, that they are automatically safer to interact with than a stranger. This leads to problems when someone sneaks into a party. Strangers can use the trust of others to rob them, con them, sexually assault them or harm them in other ways. This is why it is so important to have event security guards at your next event. An armed security guard will act as a deterrent to crime. People will be much less likely to attempt to sneak into a party when they see a uniformed guard. If the guard is provided with a guest list, he or she can keep strangers out. Event security guards can also be used in the case of theft or violence. For more information on security guard services, please contact us today.

Did You Know? There were more than 2 million burglaries in the United States in 2009. (Source: Disaster Center)

Criminals don’t always wait until you’re away from home

Most people lock their doors and set their alarm systems when they leave their homes. They know to close windows and lock their gates when they’re away. However, many people would be surprised to know that burglaries still take place even when someone is at home! How do these seemingly brazen home invasions happen? They usually occur when the residents of the home are not on the main floor of the house. This can be during the night when everyone is upstairs sleeping, early in the morning when parents are busy getting their kids ready for school or during a summer barbecue when everyone is in the backyard. Unfortunately a break-in can happen almost any time. But what can you do about it? The first step is to always secure your doors and windows at all times. Have good, strong deadbolt locks on all doors and consider installing bars in your windows. It’s also important to always lock your doors, even if you are at home. Another way to prevent home invasions is to turn on certain zones of your property’s home security system. For example, if you are upstairs for the night, you may wish to activate the motion detectors on the main floor. If you’re moving around inside the house, you can turn off the motion sensors, but leave the alarms on your doors and windows activated.

Personal Security at all times

When many people think of security these think of protecting buildings and valuables. However, the most valuable asset in your life is your own person and so it’s important that you spend some time thinking about your own personal security when you are out of your home. t’s impossible to know the motives of others or to predict their actions and so you need to prepare for every possible situation. Obviously, the first thing you should do is avoid entering any dangerous situations whenever possible. A dangerous situation can vary depending on your surroundings, who is nearby and what time of day it is. For example, a bus stop may not be a dangerous place to stand during the day when it is light out and there are a number of people around, but it can become dangerous at night when you are alone. You should always be aware of your surroundings and avoid getting into a situation where you do not feel comfortable. Because you should be aware of your surroundings at all times, you will want to avoid distractions. Headphones, MP3 players and personal entertainment centers take your focus off of your environment. Never play music so loud that you cannot hear what is going on around you. It’s also important that you always let someone know where you are going and when you will be back if you leave the house outside of your normal routine. If you don’t return when you say you will, someone will realize that you aren’t at home and assume that their could be a problem. Carry a mobile phone when you are out. Even if you do not regularly use a phone, it’s a good idea to have one on you for emergencies. You never know when you will be lost of injured. Finally, carry yourself with confidence. Walk at a good pace, keep your head up and have good posture. Appearing more confident will make it less likely that you become a victim.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

By: Sean O’Leary One of the simplest, most effective and worthwhile ways to protect yourself and your home is to know your neighbours and those around you. It’s much easier to avoid danger when you are aware of your surroundings and understand exactly who you’re dealing with in every situation. It isn’t just important to know those around you, but it’s also important to understand that even those who seem to be responsible citizens can harm you. Staying protected at all times, regardless of who else is involved, is vital. For example, consider the case of Russell Williams. Williams was a respected member of the Canadian Forces. He was a decorated commander and a former Colonel. On the surface he appeared to be completely safe. However, we have since discovered his true personality and we now know him as a serial rapist and murderer. This is an extreme example, but the underlying point is applicable to almost everyone. It’s impossible to completely understand the personality of someone you do not know. Therefore, in order to protect yourself, there are two things you should do:
  1. Get to know neighbours, coworkers and anyone else you interact with regularly
  2. Be aware of your surroundings at all times
Getting to know those that you deal with regularly will allow you to understand their personalities, their tendencies and their schedules. This will make it much more likely that you will be able to sense any peculiarities or differences in routine. However, the most important way to protect yourself is by following the second step and increasing your awareness of your surroundings. Criminals usually choose to strike those who are unaware, unprotected or not paying attention. By recognizing where you are, where everyone around you is and understanding the potential danger that each situation represents, you will stay safer. Note that there is no way to catch all criminals in the act. A functional, capable security system can assist you and it will often notice things that you do not.

An Emergency Preparedness Kit: Security in all Situations

You never know when an emergency can strike and once one occurs, it’s usually too late for you to prepare. Natural disasters, severe weather, power outages, accidents and other emergencies can seriously impact your life. At a minimum they will be an inconvenience to your daily routine. In the worst case scenarios, they can lead to injuries and even death. So how do you keep your family safe from unexpected danger? Obviously there is no way to predict and prevent future emergencies, but you can assemble an emergency preparedness kit that will keep you safe in a variety of situations. Here are a few things that you could put in your kit:
  • Water. You should have at least a three day supply.
  • Non-perishable food (canned food, peanut butter, crackers, cereal, etc.)
  • A manual can opener
  • A flash light and batteries
  • First-aid supplies (bandages, scissors, tweezers, latex gloves, etc.)
  • Blankets and warm clothing
  • Toilet paper, soap, garbage bags
  • Cash
  • Identification
  • A battery operated or crank radio
  • Necessary medications
  • Games and books

Keeping Your Kids Safe At School

Everyone wants their children to be safe. There are a few tips we can off that will help accomplish that goal. Do not place your child’s name on a visible location on their clothing or belongings. Doing so will make it more likely that someone will pretend to your child. Have your child memorize their full name, phone number, address as well as their parents’ names and phone numbers. Talk to your children about their day. Discussing things like bullying, weapons, drugs, name calling and any other potential dangers. Many kids will not want to discuss these things, so do you best to make them feel comfortable and have a casual but serious conversation with them. Make sure your kids know they can speak to you and give them options for what they can do in dangerous situations. Especially for younger children, it’s important to have a code word. This word can be used in situations where someone other than the usual person will be picking the kids up. If this person does not say the right code word, your child should not leave with them and should contact the police. Teach your kids about wearing seat belts and other vehicle safety measures. Friends or other parents may not be the safest drivers, so make sure your kids buckle up.Look for warning signs like drops in grades or changes in appearance, sleep patterns or appetites. These symptoms can be the result of stress, bullying, drugs or many other dangerous situations. Another tip is to use your home alarm system to track when your children enter the house. If your children always disable the alarm at 3:30 when they get home from school, you know they are at home. If one day they don’t disable the alarm, there could be a problem.

What Happens When Your Alarm Sounds

By: Sean O’Leary You’re away from home and a burglar sneaks up to your house. He quickly breaks the glass on your front door and opens it. An alarm sounds within seconds. The burglar is spooked and runs away. Your cell phone rings and the alarm monitoring station alerts you of the situation. Shortly afterward a security guard arrives at your home to survey the situation and make sure everything is okay. This is how a monitored alarm system works. But what really happens on our end? How does the situation quickly progress from a break-in to a response? Not everyone knows the details of exactly how an alarm system monitoring station handles your emergency. SafeTech Alarm Systems has been providing home and business security systems for almost 20 years. We have the experience necessary to protect your property and we’d like to share the alarm system process with you. When your alarm is activated, the alarm system monitoring station is alerted within seconds. If you home or business is equiped with security cameras, the monitoring station will be able to check the cameras immediately and assess the situation. Then, the alarm monitoring station will quickly telephone the numbers they have been provided with. If no one answers, police or security guards will be sent out to check for visible signs of forced entry. SafeTech technical support is contacted on each alarm to help direct operators and provide a service history to the operator. Even if someone does answer, the monitoring station will ask for a special code before reacting. This prevents burglars from disabling your alarm system by lying on the phone. The alarm system process is set up to ensure your home stays secure. A big part of the process is having an accurate call list for the monitoring station to follow, so it is very important to keep your emergency contact list up to date! Contact SafeTech Alarm Systems today if you would like to make adjustments to your emergency contact list.

Carbon Monoxide Is Deadly

Carbon Monoxide is a silent killer. It cannot been seen or detected by smell, but it can definitely be deadly. It’s very important that you have working carbon monoxide detectors in your home and that they function properly. Carbon Monoxide can be generated from malfunctioning or improper use of furnaces, water heaters, ranges, fireplaces and other fuel-burning appliances. Because the gas is colourless, odorless and tasteless, it is nearly impossible for people to detect without the aid of carbon monoxide detectors. Depending on the amount of carbon monoxide in the air, the gas can cause diziness, headaches, loss of judgment, nausea, convulsions, respiratory arrest, unconsciousness and even death. Thankfully there are several ways to detect carbon monoxide in your home. The first is a simple carbon monoxide detector. These devices make an audible noise when the deadly gas is detected. It is important to have a carbon monoxide installed in each floor of your home. You can also have your carbon monoxide detector monitored by a central monitoring station. Doing so will allow you to be alerted by phone should any carbon monoxide gas be present in your home or business. For more information on monitoring carbon monoxide detectors, please click here.

How To Avoid Falling For Internet Scams

These days almost everyone is on the Internet on a regular basis. The average person completes several online transactions each day, from banking to scheduling appointments to booking trips. Unfortunately, because so many people trust Internet applications on a daily basis, the Internet is also a breeding ground for scams. Some are obvious to detect, but others are quite sophisticated and require careful examination to pinpoint. However, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself from Internet scams. The first thing you can do is to seriously think about the situation you are presented with. If you receive an email promising something that seems too good to be true, it probably is. This holds especially true for anyone asking for money up front. Legitimate business deals don’t usually ask for money up front nor do they show up randomly in your inbox. It’s also always important to consider the source. If you receive an email from a friend that looks suspicious, your friend’s email address may have been hacked. If you get an email from a financial institution or anyone else asking for your account information or password it’s important that you verify the sender before you give out any details. Finally, do not give anyone your username, your password or any critical account information ever. Only enter this information on secure websites and only on the official website of the company in question. A common Internet scam involves setting up spoof websites that look like official sites. When a user enters personal information on these sites, it is stolen by the scammers. Never email your credit card or bank information to anyone. Legitimate companies do not ask for this information via email. Stay safe online by always verifying the situation before you give out any information!

Seven Security Flaws In Your Home That You May Not Be Aware Of

By: Sean O’Leary Most people take precautions to secure their homes. Alarm systems, locks, surveillance cameras and other security services are definitely good ways to protect your property. However, there are likely several weak points and security flaws in your home that you’ve never even thought about. Securing these weak points is vital to the safety of your home.Your Garage Always secure your garage. This is especially true if you can enter your home from within the garage, but it’s important in every home, regardless of the layout. Not only can burglars use your garage to enter your home, but they can also find tools inside. It’s much easier to break into a house if you have a hammer or a ladder, so lock your garage securely! Your Lock The quality of the lock on your door goes a long way to protecting your property. Many burglars enter homes through the front door, so it’s important to invest in a strong lock. Dead bolts are the best choice. Your Back Door Don’t just focus on the front door. The back door and any side doors need just as much attention. These doors are likely less visible from the street, so burglars will be able to spend more time trying to open them. The same goes for your gate or sliding door to your deck. All of these doors require proper locks and possibly bars or gates. Your Lighting Lighting is your friend and a burglar’s enemy. No one wants to be seen commiting a crime, so installing motion-activated lighting around your home and your property can save your house. Don’t forget to add lighting around your garage, your driveway and any other landscaping features. Criminals often use these places to hide. Your Basement Windows A basement window can be an easy entry point for a burglar. Adding security bars can eliminate this option for criminals. Remember, when installing security bars, make sure you have bars that can be easily removed from the inside in case of fire. The Second Floor Many people forget about securing the second floor of their homes. The problem is that criminals can use ladders or ledges to break in to the windows on the second floor. These should always be secured. Your Alarm System Is your alarm system adequate for your protection? Is it tested regularly? Are there any areas that are not covered? It’s important to inspect your alarm system regularly and to keep an eye out for new technologies that can improve your protection! To schedule a free security consultation with one of our loss prevention experts, please contact us today!

How To Avoid Being Mugged

Being mugged is a terrifying experience. There is usually physical confrontation, you feel helpless and scared and the assault costs you some of your personal property. While there is no way to ensure that you will never be mugged, there are a few things you can do to reduce the chance. Look Confident Carry yourself with your head up and your shoulders back and walk at a good pace. Keep Your Eyes On The Crowd Get into the routine of surveying those around you at all times. This is not to say that you should be paranoid, but it’s important to know who is nearby. If a person or group seems dangerous, casually avoid them. Protect Your Valuables Keep jewellery, money and other valuables close to your body and protected from others. This includes your purse or wallet. Waving a purse around carelessly is a good way to get it stolen. Consider placing your wallet in your front pocket. It’s tougher for someone to steal it there than in your back pocket. Be Focused Even if you are lost or in an unknown area, looking confused or panicked my make you a target. Maintain your composure at all times. Avoid Being Alone and Isolated Stick to more crowded routes or walk with a friend. If you simply must walk alone, have a cell phone handy to call for help.

Regularly Testing Your Alarm System Is Vital

Having an alarm system is an excellent way to keep your home safe. However, your alarm system can only protect you if it is functioning properly.Make sure to test your alarm system regularly. Some monitored alarm systems are frequently tested by the alarm system monitoring station that watches them, but you may want to conduct your own testing as well. You will want to consult your manual for specific instructions, but here is how you can test your DSC alarm system from home. If you would like to verify that your Power, battery and siren are fully functioning, you can perform a local system test in the user menu section of your alarm system. Press [*][6] followed by your 4 digit master code and press [4]. The panel will perform the following; activate the Siren, keypad buzzer and all keypad status lights for 2 seconds, test the backup battery and transmit a reporting code to the central station.

Peace of Mind: Recently Released Criminals Can Hurt You – Vol #9

Protect Yourself From Dangerous Criminals

By: Sean O’Leary A convicted rapist who is considered a “high risk to re-offend” has been released from prison and is living in Toronto. Ronald Peter Tibando was convicted of raping two women in parking garages in 1980. He was paroled in 1989, but was placed back in prison after assaulting a woman as she stepped off of a bus. He also assaulted two female staff members while in prison. Toronto Police Services issued a community safety notification upon his release. This situation highlights the need to remain aware of your surroundings and who lives and works in your neighbourhood at all times. This is especially true for when you are traveling alone. Tibando attacked his victims in parking garages and parks; isolated areas where he could catch them alone. Whenever you are alone in an area where others cannot easily see or hear you, be sure to exercise extra caution. Stay alert and watch your surroundings and avoid any situations where you could be harmed. When in doubt, call a friend on your cell phone and tell him or her everything that’s going on. Reporting someone’s appearance to a friend over the phone could keep you safe. If you feel as if you are in danger, take a different route and avoid the situation all together.

Did You Know? In Canada, the incarceration rate increased from 129 per 100,000 adult population in 2004/2005 to 131 per 100,000 in 2005/2006. (Source: PrisonJustice.ca)

How Internal Fraud Can Bankrupt Your Company

When most people think of theft and damages to a company, they think of burlaries and vandalism caused by those outside the organization While such attacks do happen, they’re not the most common forms of theft for most businesses.Unfortunately, most companies have much more serious problems dealing with fraud and theft from within their own organizations. However, there are steps you can take to protect your business. In cases of theft, one of the best ways to secure your business is by having security cameras. Not only do you need cameras in areas where clients or visitors may be entering, but these cameras should be in any location in your office where theft could occur.Stock rooms, supply rooms and other locations are targets for thieves working within your company. But that isn’t all you should worry about. It is much more common, and often much more costly, when employees use financial records and company technology to steal from your business. It makes sense when you think about it. It’s difficult for someone to walk out of an office undetected with several boxes of company property, but it’s possible for someone with access to the company’s financial information to quietly cause quite a bit of damage without being detected. It’s important for companies to have proper checks and balances in place and to regularly look into audit trails and accounting practices to prevent losses. On the technology front, you should always be aware of how your employees are using company computers and limit their access to data they have no need for.
