Protecting Community: Setting Up A Neighbourhood Watch Program

By Sean O’Leary

Being involved in crime prevention is one of the best ways to avoid becoming a victim. Sitting back and waiting for crime to come to you is a dangerous path to follow. Only through proactive attempts to fight crime can you ensure the safety of your home, your family and your community.

A great way to take a proactive approach protecting community and stopping crime is by joining a community Neighbourhood Watch program.

A Neighbourhood Watch program is when a group of citizens devoted to crime and vandalism prevention get together to watch out for one another and make their neighbourhood safer. Sometimes these groups are called “crime watch” groups as well.

When members suspect criminal activity, if they see something suspicious or if they witness an actual crime taking place, members contact the appropriate authorities immediately. Neighbourhood Watch groups are effective because they can watch for criminal behaviour at almost all times and act on this behaviour right away.

If you would like to start a Neighbourhood Watch program in your community and become involved in protecting community, a good way to start is by speaking to as many neighbours as possible. If your neighbours are unfamiliar with the Neighbourhood Watch concept, you can provide them with that information as well. Once you have a number of people willing to participate, schedule a community meeting to discuss the particulars of the group. You will want to collaborate with local authorities as well as local security providers. Both of these groups can give you important information and tools that will help improve your group.

Hanging Neighbourhood Watch signage on all participating homes is a great way to let potential criminals know that the community is on the look out for suspicious behaviour. This in itself can be a great crime prevention tool. You may be able to get signs from the police or from a security company. If not, you can make them yourself. There are many ways to protecting community.

Security companies in your neighbourhood may also be willing to show you which tools are available to catch criminals in the act. Security technology is always growing, changing and improving, so you may learn something new by talking to a local security provider. When a community decides that it’s not going to be victimized by crime it’s a powerful statement and an act that will reduce crime in your area.

Preventing Back-To-School Bullying

Children have been back at school for several weeks now and you’ve probably once again settled into a normal routine. Now that the hustle and bustle of a new school year has died down, it’s a perfect time to talk to your children about bullying.

Many different children of all ages can be victims of bullies and each child reacts to bullying in a different manner. Just because your child seems fine and he or she is not showing any symptoms of being stressed, depressed or sad, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a bullying problem at school.

You should start by talking to your child. He or she may not be willing to dicuss being bullied right away, but talking about school, friends and other day-to-day activities may bring out conversation about school bullies.

It’s important that your children feel safe discussing bullies. Even if your children are not being bullied themselves, you want your children to feel safe discussing school bullies so that you will know about any problems that may be occurring at school.

If you discover that your child is being bullied, you may want to talk to the bully’s parents or your child’s teacher. You will also want to teach your child that bullying is wrong and that having confidence and being brave often stops bullies.

Your child’s school may even have an anti-bullying program that helps educate children and make them feel safe.

If the school doesn’t have such a program, you may want to talk to some other parents and teachers about starting one up.

Facebook Security

If you don’t use Facebook, there’s a good chance that someone you know does. The social network is incredibly popular and people all over the world are using the site to share photos, keep in touch with friends and plan events. However, Facebook does have some privacy and security concerns. If you’ve been using the site for a while, you may be familiar with some of them. However now Facebook has finally come out with a full guide to security on the site. It is a 14-page document that is written for “young adults, parents and educators.” The guide is available on the Facebook website. Facebook’s security page also covers a variety of other topics involving staying safe online.

One of the main topics that it covers is how you can avoid being attacked on the site. Topics range from choosing secure passwords to avoiding dangerous scripts and ignoring fake friend requests. It also mentions how hackers can use shared links to cause damage and suggests that users do not click unknown or strange-looking links, even if they are from friends.

Not only is the guide helpful, but it also stresses an important point. Now that more and more people are using Facebook and storing more and more personal information on the site, taking precautions and being safe are more important than ever.

Many Internet security tips are listed on the Facebook security page including:
  • Choosing a strong password that is difficult to guess.
  • Not sharing personal information with people you do not know and trust
  • Using caution when opening links or downloading attachments
  • Making sure that you use the most updated version of your web browser available
  • Installing anti-virus and anti-spyware technology on your computer
  • How to properly adjust your Facebook privacy settings
  • How to report suspicious or strange Facebook behaviour
