Be Aware of Your Surroundings

By: Sean O’Leary One of the simplest, most effective and worthwhile ways to protect yourself and your home is to know your neighbours and those around you. It’s much easier to avoid danger when you are aware of your surroundings and understand exactly who you’re dealing with in every situation. It isn’t just important to know those around you, but it’s also important to understand that even those who seem to be responsible citizens can harm you. Staying protected at all times, regardless of who else is involved, is vital. For example, consider the case of Russell Williams. Williams was a respected member of the Canadian Forces. He was a decorated commander and a former Colonel. On the surface he appeared to be completely safe. However, we have since discovered his true personality and we now know him as a serial rapist and murderer. This is an extreme example, but the underlying point is applicable to almost everyone. It’s impossible to completely understand the personality of someone you do not know. Therefore, in order to protect yourself, there are two things you should do:
  1. Get to know neighbours, coworkers and anyone else you interact with regularly
  2. Be aware of your surroundings at all times
Getting to know those that you deal with regularly will allow you to understand their personalities, their tendencies and their schedules. This will make it much more likely that you will be able to sense any peculiarities or differences in routine. However, the most important way to protect yourself is by following the second step and increasing your awareness of your surroundings. Criminals usually choose to strike those who are unaware, unprotected or not paying attention. By recognizing where you are, where everyone around you is and understanding the potential danger that each situation represents, you will stay safer. Note that there is no way to catch all criminals in the act. A functional, capable security system can assist you and it will often notice things that you do not.

An Emergency Preparedness Kit: Security in all Situations

You never know when an emergency can strike and once one occurs, it’s usually too late for you to prepare. Natural disasters, severe weather, power outages, accidents and other emergencies can seriously impact your life. At a minimum they will be an inconvenience to your daily routine. In the worst case scenarios, they can lead to injuries and even death. So how do you keep your family safe from unexpected danger? Obviously there is no way to predict and prevent future emergencies, but you can assemble an emergency preparedness kit that will keep you safe in a variety of situations. Here are a few things that you could put in your kit:
  • Water. You should have at least a three day supply.
  • Non-perishable food (canned food, peanut butter, crackers, cereal, etc.)
  • A manual can opener
  • A flash light and batteries
  • First-aid supplies (bandages, scissors, tweezers, latex gloves, etc.)
  • Blankets and warm clothing
  • Toilet paper, soap, garbage bags
  • Cash
  • Identification
  • A battery operated or crank radio
  • Necessary medications
  • Games and books

Keeping Your Kids Safe At School

Everyone wants their children to be safe. There are a few tips we can off that will help accomplish that goal. Do not place your child’s name on a visible location on their clothing or belongings. Doing so will make it more likely that someone will pretend to your child. Have your child memorize their full name, phone number, address as well as their parents’ names and phone numbers. Talk to your children about their day. Discussing things like bullying, weapons, drugs, name calling and any other potential dangers. Many kids will not want to discuss these things, so do you best to make them feel comfortable and have a casual but serious conversation with them. Make sure your kids know they can speak to you and give them options for what they can do in dangerous situations. Especially for younger children, it’s important to have a code word. This word can be used in situations where someone other than the usual person will be picking the kids up. If this person does not say the right code word, your child should not leave with them and should contact the police. Teach your kids about wearing seat belts and other vehicle safety measures. Friends or other parents may not be the safest drivers, so make sure your kids buckle up.Look for warning signs like drops in grades or changes in appearance, sleep patterns or appetites. These symptoms can be the result of stress, bullying, drugs or many other dangerous situations. Another tip is to use your home alarm system to track when your children enter the house. If your children always disable the alarm at 3:30 when they get home from school, you know they are at home. If one day they don’t disable the alarm, there could be a problem.
