Power Cord & Electricity Safety

Electricity is a huge part of society. Today it’s difficult to spend more than an hour without using it in some way. While electricity is useful and generally quite safe, it can also be quite harmful or deadly in certain situations. The first step in handling electricity safely is to check the cord of the device you are plugging in. If the cord is frayed or damaged or if the plug itself is bent, broken or modified in any way, you should not use the device. You should always unplug your appliances and other electrical devices by pulling on the plug itself, not by pulling the cord from a distance. Pulling on an electrical cord can damage and even break the cord, which could lead to sparks, a fire or serious burns. You should also take care to avoid overloading outlets. Only plug in what you need at the time. An overloaded outlet can short out or catch on fire. Also, if you live in an older home, you may not have adequate wiring in order to support today’s appliances. We use much more electricity today than we ever have, so a home that was built quite some time ago may not be able to handle it. You should have this problem looked at by an experienced electrician. If you are using an extension cord, it’s important to use one of adequate length. A cord that is too long could easily be tripped over and a cord that is too short could be damaged if you try and stretch it. Never plug extension cords into each other in order to reach a father distance and always use cords of the right wattage. Do not run cords under furniture or other appliances and do not place them in doorways or anywhere else where they could be damaged.

Fraud Prevention Online

People store a lot of information on the Internet and they use the web on a daily basis in order to communication, share and conduct transactions. Unfortunately, because there is so much happening online at all times, and because it’s happening so quickly, there is a great potential for fraud. The main way to avoid being defrauded on the Internet is to use common sense. You would not give your credit card number or banking information to a complete stranger, so you shouldn’t give this information to an unknown website. If any website asks for sensitive personal information, be sure that you know exactly what this website is and why it is asking for the information. A common scam is to set up spoof websites in an attempt to acquire personal information. For example, if your bank’s website is 1234bankingwebsite.com, you should make sure that you only enter your information on this particular site. It’s also important to maintain your privacy online. Something posted on a social networking website or even in your email could be hacked and stolen. Do not give you personal information to anyone online and do not post details that could be used to steal your identity on any social networking sites. If someone took your name, phone number, address, email address and date of birth from your Facebook page, they may be able to use this information along with other details about your life in order to steal your identity. This is why privacy settings on social networking sites are so important.

Portable Space Heater Safety

As we continue into winter, many people are turning to space heaters for warmth. However, like with anything that generates heat, the potential for danger exists. We’ve put together a list of tips to help keep you safe when using your space heater. Portable space heater safety is important.
  • Always be in the room and alert when you are using a portable space heater. Do not leave a space heater on when you are away and never use one while you are sleeping.
  • Read the portable space heater safety and operating instructions for the heater before using it and follow them exactly.
  • Do not operate your heater near any source of water.
  • Keep paper and fabric such as sheets and blankets away from the heater at all times.
  • Do not extend the heater’s cord too far as the tension could topple the heater and start a fire.
  • Before using the heater, inspect it thoroughly for damage and never use a damaged heater.
  • Always place the heater on a level surface where it will not tip over.
  • Watch your children and pets around the heater.
  • If possible, select a heater than has an automatic shut off, a timer and a cut-off function that stops the heater if it is tipped over.
Remember the importance of portable space heater safety.
