On Thursday November 3rd, two teenagers were shot near a middle school in the north end of Toronto. This shooting was shocking.

A 19-year-old male was shot several times and rushed to the hospital in critical condition. A 14-year-old female was shot in the ankle and was taken to the hospital with less serious injuries. The shooting took place outside Oakdale Park Middle School in the Jane and Finch area of Toronto.

It appears that the young girl was not a primary target of the shooter, but was shot after she witnessed the shooting of the male victim. The school was locked down for several hours following the shooting, as were two other schools in the area. Toronto Police are currently investigating the situation. They are looking for two suspects in connection with the shooting.

Safety Tips if the Shooting Occurs

In many public shootings there is no advance notice that anything could be wrong. However, if you see any suspicious activity, such as a person with a weapon or other suspicious activity. Doing so could safe a life. The bottom line is that you need to remain alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. If something seems wrong, leave the area right away.

If a shooting does take place, you’ll need to act quickly. If you are close enough to see the shooter, run or hide. Hiding behind a door or large furniture will certainly help. If you have to run, run quickly and in a zigzag manner. This makes you a more difficult target to hit. If you are unable to see the shooter but you’ve heard gun shots, take cover immediately. If you have a cell phone, call the authorities as soon as you are safe.

Unless you are faced with absolutely no other option, do not attempt to attack the shooter. Avoid him if the shooting occurs. He or she has a gun and isn’t afraid to use it. If authorities are on the scene, always follow their direction and stay safe. Police officers and security guards often have the training and experience needed to react quickly and safely in dangerous situations. SafeTech offers security guard services for businesses, special events and many other purposes.

VoIP Alarm Systems

These days not everyone has a landline in their home. More and more people are trusting cellular phones and voice over IP (VoIP) systems to communicate. Alarm systems are adapting as well.

Most people believe that you need a landline in order to have a monitored home alarm system. That was true in the past, but today it is no longer the case.

Alarm systems are now able to safely and securely communicate through VoIP systems. Some people have worried about using the Internet and VoIP systems with their alarm systems because an unreliable Internet connect could compromise your security. Thankfully, there are now systems available that ensure your alarm system remains functional regardless of the state of your telephone or Internet connection.

These alarm systems use broadband signaling as a method of alarm transmission. You can even add this functionality to your existing alarm system with easy to install modules that allows any Contact ID compatible alarm panel to be monitored by a broadband Internet connection instead of a telephone line.

Can Urban Planning Reduce Crime?

No matter where you live, there are likely some areas of your city that are more dangerous than others. You may often wonder why this is the case and think about what can be done to solve these problems.

The causes of crime are varied and they differ from city to city. However, a criminologist and professor at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Albert believes that proper urban planning plays a big part in the safety of a neighbourhood.

Filipuzzi is experienced in a field known as “environmental criminology.” She studies the way the surroundings impact illegal activity. For example, she studies how the right number of trees on a street make it inviting and visually appealing, but how too many trees obscure sightlines and increase crime.

In a recent article n the Calgary Herald, she notes that while street lights are generally a good idea to keep a neighbourhood safe, there are studies “that suggest cars are more likely to be broken into under a lamp post.”

Other urban planning tips include planning areas so that local business owners can live in the area where their businesses operate.

“It’s hard for shady people to do shady things when there’s a bunch of legitimate users taking control of the public realm,” she says.

Filipuzzi also notes that crime is not a “downtown problem” in most cities. Kelly Sundberg, chair of Mount Royal University’s justice studies department, agrees.

“In the suburbs, a lot of people go downtown to work and leave their home empty for the day. We tend to find a lot of break-and-enters in those areas,” he says. “By contrast, no one wants to commit crime when there’s lots of people around and stuff going on.”

B.C. Murder Victim Texted Boyfriend “I’m being creeped” Before Her Death

An 18-year-old girl who was killed in Armstrong, British Columbia sent her boyfriend a text message moments before her death. This message was “I’m being creeped.” which suggested that someone was following or harassing her.

Taylor Van Diest was found unconscious with severe injuries on Monday October 31st. She lated died in hospital.

When her boyfriend replied to her text message and received no response, friends and family members went looking for her. They found her near a railway crossing that was less than one kilometre from her home. She was rushed to hospital but did not survive.

Authorities are still looking for a suspect as well as anyone who may have seen Van Diest earlier that day. The RCMP have assigned more than 30 officers to the case.
