Oakwood–Vaughan, also known as
Oakwood Village, is a Toronto neighbourhood that is located in the former municipality of York. The neighbourhood’s borders are Eglinton Avenue in the north, Dufferin Street in the west, St. Clair Avenue in the south and Winnett Avenue and Arlington Avenue in the east. In addition to Dufferin Street and Eglinton Avenue, the main streets in the neighbourhood are Oakwood Avenue, Vaughan Road and Rogers Road.
Oakwood Village can be further broken down into two smaller regions. The neighbourhood’s northern half is nicknamed “Five Points,” as it is the intersection of Oakwood Avenue, Vaughan Road and Belvidere Avenue. The western half of Oakwood-Vaughan is sometimes called “Northcliffe.”
The neighbourhood contains two high schools (Oakwood Collegiate Institute and Vaughan Road Academy) as well as several middle schools and elementary schools. There are also two public libraries in the region: Oakwood Village public library and Maria A. Shchuka public library.
Oakwood–Vaughan Crime Rates
When researching crime rates in order to determine the safety of an area, it is important to pay attention to the crime rate in the area as a whole as well as the surrounding area, rather than just the specific numbers for smaller regions. Only when taking both into account can you truly understand the amount of property crime and crime against people in the neighbourhood. In addition to researching Oakwood Village crime rates, the
crime rates for nearby Humewood-Cedarvale – as well as other nearby Toronto neighbourhoods – should be looked at as well.
In Oakwood-Vaughan, the area bordered by Eglinton Avenue, Vaughan Road and Winnett Avenue has an average of 11.78 crimes against people per 1000 living and working in the area. This region has an average of 15.7 crimes against property per 1000.
The area bordered by Vaughan Road, Rogers Road, Dufferin Street and Oakwood Avenue, has an average of 10.52 crimes against people and 16.39 crimes against property. This area includes Fairbanks Memorial Park.
The region bordered by Rogers Road, St. Clair Avenue, Oakwood Avenue and Westmount Avenue has an average of 6.65 crimes against people and 12.93 crimes against property per 1000. West of Westmount Avenue to Dufferin Street and outside of the Oakwood-Vaughan neighbourhood there is an average of 7.71 crimes against people and 17.04 crimes against property.
The area bordered by Vaughan Road, St. Clair Avenue, Oakwood Avenue and Arlington Avenue has an average of 7.5 crimes against people and 11.77 crimes against property per 1000 living and working in the region.
Oakwood–Vaughan Crime
In December 2011, a robbery and swarming took place in the Oakwood and Vaughan Road area. From Toronto Police Service:
A 37 year old male reports that on December 12, 2011 at approximately 0300 hours he was walking with a friend in the area of Oakwood Avenue and Vaughan Road when he was approached by four male suspects. The suspects grabbed the victim, threw him to the ground and removed his wallet. The suspects then fled the scene in an unknown direction. The victim was rendered unconscious and sustained several injuries about his body and will seek his own medical attention.
In September 2011 police seized drugs and a gun from a man in the Eglinton and Oakwood Avenue area. From InsideToronto:
A man faces a dozen charges after police seized drugs and a gun in the Eglinton and Oakwood avenues area. Police allege officers conducted an undercover drug transaction with a man on Wednesday, Sept. 21. A suspect was arrested. Police allegedly seized drugs, cash and a handgun.
In August 2011, two people were stabbed in the Eglinton and Oakwood area. From CP24:
Police are searching for a suspect after two men were stabbed at a bar early Sunday morning. The incident happened at a bar on Eglinton Avenue west of Oakwood Avenue.
Police said two men were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries. One man was stabbed in the chest, the other was stabbed in the arm.
In May 2010, a man was shot and killed in the Oakwood–Vaughan neighbourhood. From City News:
Homicide detectives are investigating after a male was shot and killed in the west end Monday afternoon.
Shortly after 3:30pm, emergency crews arrived at the scene on Winona Dr., near St. Clair and Vaughan avenues, and found a male with a bullet wound in the chest.
The victim had no vital signs and was rushed to the trauma centre at St. Michael’s Hospital. Despite paramedics’ best efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
